Since its FREE over here , you don't have to worry about that.

It is not really "free", is it?
You pay for it during your working years in the form of taxes.
Ditto for OAS, CPP & GIS - these are not "free".
OAS is your tax money being refunded to you after 30 years.
CPP is your contributions + some investment growth + some pension features such as inflation protection, etc.

You pay taxes in India also during your working years . But that tax money is not used to give free quality healthcare or quality education. The free gov hospitals or free gov schools are horrible in India. Middle class or rich people always send their loved ones to private schools or hospitals due to that.

So here atleast those taxes are used to give Free education till Grade 12 & Free healthcare, better than going to some corrupt politicans or officials pocket.

CPP is not just your contribution , but the employer also contributes an equal amount.

Does the Indian gov. give you any of your taxes back in the form of OAS or GIS , when you retire ? Unless you have company pension when you retire you are screwed in India.

I think most educated , decent & people from good families , no longer take dowry.

In fact anti dowry laws are being misused by Girl's families to harass & arrest ( non bailable ) innocent husbands & their families.

Very few people are taking dowry thesedays among educated & well qualified people.

Dowry,
In India, if you have a girl child, then you will have to pay a sum of money to the bride groom to take the girl as his wife. When giving the Girl to the boy, you also will have to give a fixed amount of jewels and promise what property will be given to the girl after your death.
Ever year, you have to buy new dresses for the Girl and the boy. The first child birth expenses will have to be taken care of the girls parents and a Gold chain is to be put for that child and every child.

This is the practice among most TN residents.

Hope this helps you to understand our culture.

University education is highly subsidized in India.
The fees that students pay for most general colleges/university does not pay for all the costs associated.

To be fair, post secondary education in Canada is also heavily subsidized.

However, the Indian govt. does provide lots of other different types of subsidies that are not applicable to Canada, such as ration system.
India also has a very large defense budget compared to Canada.

There is wastage everywhere.
I agree there is more direct & visible corruption in India.
Regardless, public education and public health care in Canada are not "free" by any means.

Correct, which is why it is not welfare like OAS.
Although, there are social benefits components to CPP which makes it slightly different than a true pension.
Ultimately, there is a cost to everything - there is a cost to CPP as well.
It increases the cost of doing business, and companies (employers) pass on that cost to the consumers of their products.

It can, of course, be argued that the benefits of CPP far outweigh its costs, but it is again not a free benefit.

Every country utilizes its tax revenues in different ways.
Canada uses a lot of its tax revenue for various kinds of social programs and welfare programs.
The United States uses its for massive defense & military spending, agricultural & energy subsidizes, auto/manufacturing sector subsidies, etc.
India uses its revenue for lots of different social reasons, too.
India subsidizes agriculture, railways, public transit, postal system; then there is defense and civil defense subsidies.
There is a huge cost to maintaining India's highly complex legislative and judicial system, and its democracy in general.

Sure there is corruption, but then you are comparing a country of 1.2B with a country of barely 30M.
Imagine the cost of organizing a general election in India vs. Canada, just as an example.

I am in IT and just stepped into 40s, I want to explore working in other fields that could fit me (not very physically demanding), also want to work in other countries pref warmer countries like middle east.

I don't enjoy beach, Golf etc., etc., I would be more than happy if I have access to gym (it gives me pleasure to move my arms / legs), play some light sports like badminton, watch TV, movies and help kids where ever they need assistance.

Somehow I feel life is bit boring here (as it is very organized) and I am not much liking it, like to live with many relatives and friends, and connect with my home town atmosphere, what my kids / wife want is a different thing. Often I feel trapped in my own net :) :), the more stable I am, I feel that more. Yeah, true I am not setting bit career goals., perhaps because I've switched to contracting.

Sounds familiar :) - especially, the last paragraph.

Dowry :
Adamthroat,
You are misguided on dowry. There was a episode on CNN.
Even if you donot take dowry, the bride can accuse your family that they asked you for dowry and put you in jail.
There have been cases where handicapped and hospitalized parents have been accused and sent to jail. So much so that the SC has asked the police to do due dligence before blindly following the law.
The whole law has to go or reworded.
Just google it.

Adamthorat:
I am not sure if you are desi or a white but you are misguided about India.
Govt. hospitals and Govt. schools are not like before. Some of the best treatments can be had from govt. hospitals like AIIMS, Madras Medical college hospital, Adyar cancer centre, regional cancer centre-Trivandrum, Medical college hospital Trivandrum to name a few.
There are some good govt. school which gives good results. Just depends on your locality.
Also in states like TN, you get monthly pension, free rice, pulses (say 20 kg per month per family). At Pongal or new year you get twice the amount of rice/ pulses. During Deepavali, you get a free grinder, fan, Iron box. (These things are sold at 50% for money). Amma canteen offers Rs 1 idly and Rs 5 sambar rice.
TN also offers money and Gold to brides getting married.
Think also about Diesel, Kerosense and Cooking Gas subsidy.
Who do you think pays for all this? The corporation tax and 2.9% paying income tax.
Also you can travel in train for free. These days with all the online booking / SMS booking etc., TTR catching is very less on trains.

You just have to know the facilities being given and how to exploit it. Now with Aadhar, you are sure to get what all you are entitled too. Just now PM Modi has started a scheme where you get a free bank account and 1 lakh health insurance. This is mainly for people who donot pay income tax as they have very less to no income. Where does the money for this come from?

Did never realize that if TT did not check your ticket, it is a "facility being given by govt." to be exploited!!!
