I sponsored my parents to come here in Canada on PR status in 2013. They are still on PR status and living with us. Normally they stay with us for 1 to 2 years and going back to India for one year and coming back again. They are dependable on us and they have no income.
Recently, I received letter from Service Canada for my father regarding to fill up (GSI) guarantee supplement income application for year 2018-2019 and 2019-2020.
If we submit the application for GIS,
Is the government can claim same amount from me to recover the guarantee supplement income which they pay to my father?
As I sponsored to them so do government going to charge me back same amount money on different way to me? (As we sponsored them)
Is GIS to nothing to do with sponsorship and completely different benefits for seniors?
Any reply would be greatly appreciated.
This is an answer to one of the questions from STAR. Please read these answers and be guided by them. YES they can apply.
A: Your sponsorship undertaking came into force the moment they took up permanent resident status in Canada, not when you applied to sponsor them. When you signed the 10-year sponsorship undertaking you agreed that your parents would not benefit from social assistance in Canada during the sponsorship period. But Old Age Security is not a form of social assistance. So if your parents are otherwise eligible for Old Age Security, they can apply.
I am sure they will get some help. Please ask the M.P. and his office too.
Good Luck.
FH.

OAS and GIS are not welfare. As long as they fulfil the criteria and are eligible for it, they can apply for it - irrespective of whether they were sponsored or not.
But be careful with GIS, as every dollar they earn, talking about their earning , NOT yours, their GIS will be approximately reduced by 50 cents.
This includes their world wide income, including any bank interest, FD interest, pension, provident fund, dividends, capital gains, rental income etc whic they might be getting in India also.
So make sure CRA doesn't know of ANY such income they have in India. Please hide that income! If you declare it, they will get next to nothing in GIS.
OAS is not much. GIS is their major income.
Don't you have to finish at least 10 years in Canada before you start getting OAS + GIS?
So if they came in 2013, how come they are getting OAS and GIS, so soon in 2019? Don't they have to wait till 2023?
I think you have to be 65 and need to complete 10 years in Canada.
Or maybe India & Canada have some social security agreements, where years worked in India are calculated towards the 10 years and you start getting it at 65 in Canada, even if you haven't finished 10 years in Canada.

I was surprised too when received the letter and forms from Service Canada. I called Service Canada and they said my father is may be going to eligible for GIS as his age 65 plus. (Depending on calculation by Service Canada)
