So this is what Happened. I have this dog sitter who comes in once a week takes my dog for a walk. Lately I found out that she has been lying to me a lot because I requested her to put on the shoes when she takes my dog out for a walk on a cold day when it was -34
I have a monitoring system so I watch her from office and she took my guy in that brutal cold without shoes. I went away last month for a weekend and requested her to pick him up make him play etc but to please drop him home every night. She said she did but she did not
Now, she came up with this story(when I was away last month) that my dog bit another dog and that dog is severely injured and might need a surgery. I asked her to keep me updated and she kept saying so far so good. I am going away to India in couple of Days now this morning she
Texts me saying the vet bills came up to $300 and she expects me to pay. And she also says that he other owner should have reported about my dog who would have been quarantined(Threatening?) I don’t have any proof first off all if my dog really bit the other one(my dog is 5 years and never bit any dog)
And I am not even sure if there is any such incident at all. I asking her to provide me the details of the other family to which she keeps saying it’s better that she stays in between. She knows I have no one else to take care for my dog while I away to India so she is trying to rob money from me.
I am in such a stressful situation that I don’t even feel like going to India if it was not for my brother’s wedding. Do you guys have any suggestions? Does any of you know good dog sitters in Durham area?

Sorry for my Lengthy post
I am stressed!

There are 2 ways to attend to it .

If you have time and an alternative fire her right now and get another one.... or if some of your friend can take care of your dog , then also fire her and search for another when you return.

OR

Give her a cheque of $300/- either in her name or in the name of the person who she says has her dog bit ...... preferably in her name.

Let her take care of the dog through your vacation .When you return find a new dog sitter & settle the $300/- as advance paid or report her to the Police / Animal Authorities .

Pay $300 and go to India tension free , settle it after you come back.
Least you can ask for pics of the vet bills for the records or phone number of the vet who treated. You might be knowing name of your dog's vet ! or did she use somebody else? ..hmm

next time please sign a contract . A contract is a deterrent to carelessness.

I would second San Hugo.
Pay up and then see what can be done after you come back.
I am not sure if you are legally allowed to watch what your dog sitter does unless you inform her that the house has CCTV and that you monitor the house through your office internet.

is she a DESI dog walker ? Desi people are cheats lot of time.

I think your DOG is more important than your brother's wedding. Wedding is just 1 day of your life , its no big deal.

Marriage is more important & not wedding. I would care about the dog than some wedding. If your brother is mature enough he will understand that.

Look at the wedding photos & videos later on , or you might be looking at an abused dog later on ..choice is yours..dog V/s brother's wedding ..its a simple choice really :)

I am not sure how many responded actually have a dog and here is what I suggest as a dog owner.

Talk to her and tell her that you called the insurance and now they are asking for details about this incident as it is your responsibility to inform the insurance company. This should make her tell the truth. If you don’t have the insurance, get one, it is cheap and certainly worth it.

Pet care is a very big business in Canada and you should not have any problem finding a dog walker that too once a week which is not really a big amount. Look for Kijjiji or check with any pet care centres. I would say these are trivial things not to get tensed and can plan all your trips whatever is important to you.

One thing I don’t understand is you are asking a dog walker to take the dog out in -34C and concerned that she is not putting the shoes to the dog and even monitoring her from office? You should be worried about her walking in – 34C as you know dog walking is not a 5 minute thing. I don’t walk my dog if it is cold and rather prefer to spend time playing inside the house; not for the dog sake but for myself.
