Dear CDs,

I would like some experiences and list of precautions from CDs who moved into home for first time and had some experience which can help newbies ....

mainly relating to

snow shovelling - assuming one has a walk-way and side walk to clear
home heating - assuming its high effiency hvac
water heating -
and some frequently faces surprises etc.

To make this fresh you may wish to cut n paste any old messages with your experience and recommendations - no doubt the newbies are anxious about the cold winter days ahead....

look forward to some really useful and helpful insights

kind regards,

P_C mein

leave the house earlier than you are used to as you may have to clear the pathway before you exit

buy shovels for all members of the family as every little bit of help is helpful when it really comes down.

shovelling is hard work.

keep the ice melting salt on hand in the garage to use on the front steps/driveway etc.

dont try to keep the home too warm .. your energy bills will skyrocket. Learn to be warmly dressed in the house at all times instead. We keep our home temp at 19 in the daytime and 18 at night.

Shovel as often as you can. If it's going to snow overnight, clean it before you go to bed. And, in morning, again clean it - now you have less to clean.
Shoveling 5 kgs of snow twice over 12 hrs is better than shoveling 10 kgs of snow once.

I found shovel with steel liner at the end (are those show pusher?) less effective than all plastic ones.

Remember to drain all water from plumbing that may freeze, e.g.-garden hose outlet .

Locate your water main in the event you need to shut it off in an emergency.

Different purposes.
The all plastic ones are light weight and great for scooping and throwing fresh snow.
The ones with steel liners are better for scraping ice.
It's better to have one of each.

These were some good TIPS.Thanks!

I have a question.Do we just leave the BBQ grill with cover on patio? We have a shed but its has gaps.ALso, my neighbour told me that BBQ grills are often stolen as its easy access so they keep it in garage in winters.Any thoughts on that?
