I am a new landed immigrant here in Toronto. I want to buy new shoes for me and my wife for summer as well as for winter use.

I want to know what type of shoes people here wear during winter when snow is there. I don't have a car. I have to commute to bus stop by walk in winter. So what type/ pattern of shoes do I have to buy?

Do we have to wear regular size shoes /or/ boots with regular size shoes/or/ only boots without regular size shoes? Inside an office, are we allowed to wear boots? what generally do the people wear inside offices and inside public buildings?

Looking for tips from everybody.

Welcome to this great country, Canada !!! (I do not want to start a debate here, so I'll put a disclaimer - This is my opnion :) )

Did you know that Canada is one of the few countries in this world which has 4 distinct seasons (which is why you need winter shoes)

As regards summer, it's history now, atleast for this year. Most of my summer shoes/footwear come from India, simple samdals, kolhapuri chappal and regular leather shoes.

For the winter, you need winter shoes/boots. They usually go on sale after Halloween (Oct 31st). Try Zellers, Walmart or even Sears. Keep an eye for their sales papers. It'll say Winter shoes. Try the Sears outlet, there's one in Markham Don Mills/Steeles. On some weekends they even have upto 50% off. I've got a pair from there for around $20. Choice between shoes / boots is yours.

Most people usually wear winter shoes from home to work. At work they have a pair of regular leather shoes which they change into.

Hope that helps.

EDIT: Just noticed your id - snowfall - and your questions about snow shoes....... :D

Winter boots are not a must if you travel just from car to home. But if you intend to spend time outdoors in the snow(hiking, taboganing etc) its always good to invest in a decent pair of winter boots which can last you for atleast 5 yrs and look good too.

As jake3d put it, depends on what all u'll do...

For regular day to day usage (back n'forth to office/shopping), etc... "boots" are not a necessity...Winter "shoes" with good grip have worked fine for me... As sudesingh put it, u can find good deals at Walmart, Zellers, Sears,etc...

Also depends on which city u live in... For Montreal, Calgary its snows a lot more, so u have to be extra careful. Winter in TO is much much milder, so u dont worry too much...

The real problem is not the snow, but the ice u tread on(black is deadlier than white:) )!!!... If u trip, its gonna hurt and hurt its gonna "BAD"...

I have a pair of metal grips that i strap on my shoes when i go ice fishing (cost me something like 7/8$). I've also used it for daily commute on days when there was black ice.

U cant wear regular leather shoes...u'll scew 'em all......and will have wet/smelly socks...;)

Leave a pair of leather shoes in office.....and just switch 'em when ur in office

Cheers :p bison

It's going to be my first winter in Toronto too. Can anyone tell me how often is this black ice formed and how grave is this black ice problem in GTA? Thanx in advance!
