Since I will be experiencing my first Canadian winters I d like to know

1. What kind of jackets are best suited for the Dec - Jan - Feb period ?

2. Whats the expected price range ?

3. Where and when to buy ?

Same thing with respect to shoes . I dont wish to spoil my new leather shoes in snow . I have heard people wear winter shoes and change into office shoes upon reaching office .

1. What kind of shoes are best suited for the Dec - Jan - Feb period ?

2. Whats the expected price range ?

3. Where and when to buy ?

Responses would be appreciated by me & other new immigrants alike , now and in future .

Fido

Though I am neither a new Immigrant (or old one for that matter), I hope I can give you some input..because I grew up in the prairies...and had 6 month winters !!

If you work in a professional position and are required to do any business dealings (ie your are not just in the back end of the office), I would invest in a very professional high end winter coat .. woolen or leather. If you are looking at cheaper... for adults you are still looking at over $100 or closer to $150 for men. OF course you can get cheaper jackets and coats..but they often do not look as good.

I cannot tell you where in ONtario you can get the best outerwear..however You cannot go wrong with Sears, Bay etc.

Many people wear Winter or snow boots and change in the office. Again there are stylish shoes..and there are basic shoes. If I were you, check out what your colleagues are wearing..or go to the Bay/Sears etc..and ask a Sales Clerk what is new for the season..then study the style/make/look and shop around to see if you can get the best price.

I hope that helps. WInters are not too bad once you are dressed appropriately. Leather jackets are generally good upto -15 degrees C. IF you expect -25 or lower..ensure you are wearing layers.. tshirt/sweater/coat, hat, scarf and GOOD quality gloves or Mitts. Leather gloves dont always protect for the colder weather.

Not to be rude but these questions have been beaten to death. And the answer is....it depends - on your budget and taste.

Walmart has jackets and shoes that will do the job and are cheap. But, would they be to your taste? That is a question only you can answer. You can go to stores like Gap etc. as well and get jackets too....but they will cost twice or thrice the amount in a Walmart store.

If you're look for inexpensive stuff that is functional, perhaps you can take a trip down to a local Walmart store and look at what they have to offer.

Thanksgiving day is coming up next month - perhaps the stores will have some sales then. CDs who have been here longer can answer this.

Jackets with a thinsulate lining are very warm. Down filled jackets are also very warm.

Thanks guys for the prompt responses .

Alexm I ve failed to find specific info on these on the forum . Hence the thread.

My understanding was that a waterproof jacket with good insular lining should be ideal . But then I may be talking of Indian winters and unaware of the Canadian climate.

I have a good down jacket , but a friend discounted it as unfit for Jan-Feb months. Hence the questions . Another friend recommended an expensive 'Columbia ' jacket . My intention is to buy something basic as of now w/o sacrificing on the quality and then buying something good and expensive in off season next year .

Keeping this in mind would Walmart be the best place or are their other places also? What is the price range we are loooking at ? I visited the North York walmart and as of today they did not have any winter jackers or shoes . Are down jackets ok for the winters ?

Cheap place.....Walmart or Zellers. Sears and Bay too have special weekend deals which are quite comparable in price, but they have good quality stuff. You could be looking at upwards of $50.

It's a bit too early to find winter stuff in the stores. You'd have to wait until atleast mid-Oct for that. And unlike the Indian style of shopping, where things are cheap in off-season, it's the other way around here (to a small extent). They'll have pre-season sales starting around October-ish. And again the good deals will come when the season is ending. But after that you won't see any winter coats/jackets in stores until the following Fall.

As regards shoes - same stores. Starting price around $30.

Hope that helps....

Fido,
considering what you have been posting on other threads regarding your salary, etc., if I were you, i wouldnt worry about the cost and would go for some quality stuff.
some people even look at winter jackets and shoes as a good investment.

personally, i would recommend that you go for good stuff, even if it is a little bit "expensive"..........

Thanks a lot Sudeshsingh and mail4sagar for your replies.

I have brought the best of shoes and office wear from India since I know the brands there . Here I am new to the market and learning about brands like 'Columbia' and 'Northface' etc . I dont mind buying something good , but do not wish to pay a premium for it .At the same time would not wish to compromise on the quality in severe winters. Some of my friends here have informed that in the season end sales you get hot deals. Till then I am looking for something with 75% utility value and 25% design value .

But definitely , please post in the good and not so good brands , locations and prices as this can be a good source for current & prosepctive readers.
