Hello CDs,
I am asking this question on behalf of someone.
In 2003 Toyota, AC is not putting out cold air. It looks like it is giving cold air but only 5% to 8% at maximum. Toyota dealer charges 144 CAD just to diagnose the problem, repairing extra!
Few observations:
- Some time oil burning kind of smell comes out from air vent, when AC is on. That may not be related to the original problem.
- Heater was working fine
Do any CDs have/had same problem?
Is there any regular check/maint. I should do before I switch to cold air after using heater for several month?
Should I go with dealer or other local mechanic is okay (this is not engine problem so I was thinking not to spend big amount of money in diagnostic and see some local mechanic)?
Any other thoughts/tips/references(in GTA) are greatly appreciated.
If you own a Toyota and find that your A/C isn't properly cooling the cabin, your problem may be a mis-adjusted water control valve cable that's allowing hot water into the heater core. The poor cooling happens most often when the outside air temperatures exceeds 90°F. Start your diagnosis by checking the adjustment of the water control valve cable located under the hood (follow the heater hoses to find the valve). You might not know how to reset. This is if you have a lever for hot and cold control. Toyota makes many models and you have to be specific for this yoou will have to ask your friend to provide you with all of the details about the make, model, year, number of cylinders and a whole lot of details from his owner's manual.
{{(Start by turning the temperature control knob to the full cold position. Not the spacing between the control valve lever and the lever stop. If should be right at the stop. If it is not, you will have to adjust it. Disconnect the cable retaining clip and pull on the cable sheathing until the lever butts up against the stop. Reconnect the retaining clip. Turn the temperature dial back and forth several times and and reconfirm that the lever is in the proper position. )}}
Occasionally, there is an exhaust gas leak. Your breathing system detects it by the ingress of the gases along with the fresh air. It might not be true. But if it is, then, you could be gassed to death by the inhalation of the carbon monoxide. That fix will cost you a bit.
Since you are not a do -it yourself-er, I am sure that the Mechanic would tell you EXACTLY what it is if you bring all of these points to his attention.
By the by if the system was working fine last year, it might just need a topping of the cooling media. (Cooling gases) There are kits on the market that will permit any layman to handle the LATEST of the A/c's all by him self. Go to any Canadian Tire Store and discuss the same with the sales person. Please see anyone in the neighborhood would help you with this. It is a quick fix.
The most it will cost you is about a Hundred Bucks, if you take it to the local shop. There are lots of them. But when you have a hot season, they also get crowded. So, wait till Tuesday the 10th.
Freddie.

Are you putting the AC switch on or just using the temp control to cold region??

That is because you have air circulation set at on and engine is poorly maintained by the owner
- Heater was working fine
AC and heater are not related, you are lucky heater works fine

not required for above reason

argument is very legitimate
Any other thoughts/tips/references(in GTA) are greatly appreciated.

Thanks Freddie for your detailed answer. I am searching on the net just to understand how this things works. So I can do basic troubleshooting. The car is Toyota Matrix and it has 4 cylinders
