In Canada, for everything you need to apply.
So please apply for CCTB. You can give your account number (bank) in the application form and they will send it to your directly.
Also note that for low income earners, there is a one time money payment for book buying (used to be $ 500 per year in 2010). See that you apply for that (Might be part of your CCTB application).
Like this there are various schemes. You have to Google, find out and apply. Once you apply, please inform it in CD so that we can also recommend to others.
Hope you also know that you can meet your local MP or MLA and inform him about any grivence that you may face in Canada. Also if you are part of your local MP/MLA contact list, they will invite you once year or 2 times in a year for a thanks giving BBQ and stuff like that (Donot worry. It is free and it is paid by the Govt. of Canada). Also your local MP/MLA will send you personalized birthday greeting cards to your home (Free of Charge), if you send him an email for the same.
Know who is your MP and MLA. Go to their website and see what facilities they offer for residents of their area and fully utilize that. In one case, an India desi got a letter from their MP to grant visa for his mother (twice rejected). With the MP's letter, the lady was granted visa. So they took tim bits to the MP. The MP refused to accept the tim bits saying that they were public sevants and that they were not supposed to accept any material gift from the public. However the receptionist told them that they were free to give Tim bits to the visitors. It was distributed to those who were present there. Who knows, may be when your visit your MP / MLA you may also get some goodies such as this.

Questions jumping in my mind....I alreday have account in TD, but want to have a second one also. Someone suggested RBC is good but there is no RBC brach closer to my house. However thre is one CIBC branch near,...is this equally good or I should go for RBC. Please suggest.
Just to share that for tax filing, I have booked an appointment with a volunteer tax help clinic. They help us file our return free of charge provided our yearly income is less than 30000 - 40000 C$ depending upon various categories. So looks like it is something quite useful for the new comers.

The Big 5 , they are all the same. Pretty much the same fees & service..TD, RBC, CIBC, BMO, Scotia.
PC Financial & Tangerine ( Formerly ING DIRECT ) are a bit different ..slightly higher interest, but even that's gone downhill thesedays..but they have NO branches ..so most transactions will be online or on the phone.
For PC Financial you can use CIBC ATM machines , for Tangerine you can use Scotia Bank machines.
So if you are going with the Big 5 then go for one which is closest to you & most convenient for you.
But ,Thesedays you hardly visit a branch , most stuff is online. Some stuff you can do over the phone by calling their call centre.
I don't even remember the last time I physically visited my branch , once in a while I visit the ATM to withdraw cash ..that's pretty much it.
All the incoming is by Direct Deposit , and all the out going is by Bill Payment Online.
Even cheques I barely write, I mostly email money thesedays .
