One thing I do to avoid such calls is - not pick up any call from a number which I do not recognize. Then it goes to voice mail and if someone who is leaving a message and I recognize that person, I will pick up the call....!

CRA and Payroll folks never leave a message .... I once responded to a number after 2 weeks and found the person on the other side to be a genuine caller ..
Having said that , if they don't reach you on phone a couple of times , they do send you a letter and another if the first one is not responded.

Yes, true i got call from CRA - i pickup and person start asking me questions... i told them i am not comfortable giving info on phone . that person started giving me phone number to call back and verify etc.. and also told me if you don't give information my tax proceeding will hold .
all this raise some doubt on me... i told very clear , if you you need any information send me Post mail - i don't care if you hold my taxes but not giving any information on phone.... person hang up and till one month no news from them. - so i believe it was scam
So i learn no matter what , do not give any information on phone.
once at my motel cops called from other province and they wanted to verify one guest that stayed at our property. i told them i cant give information , if you really wanted to find out then send the police at my motel i will give them info. within 15 min cops came by and i provided info they requested.
So dont get panic of afraid , we have full right to protect our privacy. no one can come after us because we dont give information over the phone.
Also, its better for us not to give information over the phone, let them send mail than we have time to read it all clause and then reply accordingly

I recd a call today from a private caller calling me from CIC (very desi style talking and I could hear so many other guys talking in the background).
I played nice and once he played the $ card, then the fun started I started interviewing him (felt little like the Beja fry scene).....
Anyhow, as Chandresh pointed out, I never pick up any call to my home phone, let everything go to voicemail. Don't worry tax guys have your cellphone number, they call me immediately.

Besides doing some "Bheja fry" things when I am in a mood, I have done some interesting thing to these real telemarketers calls...........
I ask them how they know this person? Then I tell them they have to tell me, even if they say it is from a list they were provided, I tell them I do not believe it. I tell them I am Inspector so and so and the person you are calling is found dead in his house and I am there to investigate. I ask them to give me their exact location and how they knew the person they called and threaten them to take police action if they do not comply. I tell them that call is being traced and if they do not cooperate, they will be in trouble...........It is worth a good laugh, and the only thing I wish is I could see their faces at that time!!
