I got a suspicious call from someone pretending to be calling from Immigration Canada. I believe they are getting the numbers from the telephone directory and was asking for my first name. Had thick desi accent. On asking his details couple of times and reason for his call without giving any information from my side, he hung up.
Phone numbers can be faked. Caller id was 1-888-576-8502 which actually belongs to CIC.
Be careful about the information you give out even if the caller ID appears to be genuine.
Searched the internet. Found this link.

Thanks for sharing this.
We have to be doubly cautious in today's world.
When in doubt , please explain it to the caller politely that due to scam/s taken place with some one else , to provide their verifiable number and that you will call them back.
These guys come up with new ideas so we have to be cautious... Recall a couple of them and wish to share here :
a. Call from Microsoft asking you for your computer's password as they need to do an important antivirus upgrade remotely ... When the person refused in one instance the caller threatened to send someone to blow him up.
b. You check into your hotel room and receive a call appearing from the reception and asking you for the credit card number again ....
Be very cautious when sharing personal information.

Fido.
A colleague got a similar call over a year ago. I countered the guy on the phone and he just hung up.
My brother got a similar call claiming that he owes money to CRA and asking him to pay up. The guy even left a call back number. I called the guy from work and told him I'm calling from the Provincial Govt., the guy just hung up.

The CIC scam is a latest one. One of my friend's father received similar call and caller informed that you have an outstanding amount which has to be paid right now otherwise you will be deported. He was trying to obtain the credit card number to pay the outstanding amount. The called person was wise and he asked the caller all information like name, phone number, office address etc. When he asked the reason of all the details, the called person person (my friend's father) said that he needs all this information to report to RCMP about this scam. Guess what happened - caller hung up right away.

Now that's a new one....come to think of it, someone just standing around the reception, pretending to inquiry about rates or availability and overhears your room number.

Fido.
There are so many phone scams around here... But sometime there are legit call as well.
Best way to avoid confusion is to never out information over the phone but ask them to send any info by Mail (post) - if they asked you for mailing address , don't bother it... hang up
legit company or legit call will not shy away of sending mail.
