To Ottawa Nerd and Reach Me.

Q) What happens when an ardent S. Indian (Tamilian who has lived in Bangalore all his life) lands in Canada.

A) He craves for Indian Food, goes to Canadiandesi, finds out about Gerrard St etc, and goes to these eating joints (basically devours the sambhar and dosa's)

Q) What happens when an ardent S.Indian lands in Calgary

A) He learns to cook.

I finally managed to find a place that has some S.Indian fare in its offering. Its called Anpurna (NE Calgary). Apparently, there is a Mysore Dosa place somewhere too.

If anyone knows where one could get paruppu podi, I would be grateful.

or if he is a malayalee like me...marry somone who can cook and/or find out from the in-laws how to make the orange narial chutney to go with the dosas

cooking...my achilles heel...as my better half keeps reminding me(albeit subtly)

Anand...unfortunately you are right.
Canada is not the place with a lot of South Indians. I am an Andhraite ( though not a Telugu)..and had to learn to cook in Calgary.. BUt tell me why did you land in that god-forsaken place !!! Make a move buddy..The East beckons you..Or are you a big fan of the Stampede (Stampeders, Flames ) ...

And now a *thwackkkkk* to you...for reminding me of Dosai's and Sambhar !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shame on you...

Reachme, now I feel like fainting.. Been ages since I had Uthuppam and Medu Vadai's !!! Dont worry Anand.. I will be going back to Bangalore soon and maybe I will post some screenshots of me having finger licking Dosai's Maybet that will give you a feel of the "Heartache" that I am having right now *sob*

If you are looking for some Indian food, there is a desi restaurant near the Plaza theatre (the theatre that screens desi movies). Its a bit expensive. I dunno if you will find South Indian food there though.

Anand and Ottawa_Nerd , i can imagine what you must be going thro! The things we take for granted in India!!

Anand, Isnt there some 'mami' in your locality who might be willing to make u paruppu podi? She might be thrilled to earn some $ along the way! Actually MTR now has almost everything ready and availbale. Dont you get it in the Indian stores there?

Ottawa_nerd, you also get vadai and dosa mixes in brands like MTR..am sure you must find some of those things in the indian store, right?

Anand, if nothing works and you are willing to try it yourself, i can send you the recipe for paruppu podi..can assure you its no rocket science..just follow the instructions and am sure you will be proud of yourself.

Reachme, these days I am in packing mode... So eat what I get. However, pls send me the recipie via a pvt. message. Not sure though but I may tak you to ur word if and when I land in Bangalore...(cos most likely) thats where jobs in my field are !
