Saying "Thanks/Sorry" during each and every conversation in India is judged as too formal and denotes an absence of intimacy in relationship. In job - yes, but between friends or in near family, people do comment as being too "foreign", if you say thank you when somebody offers you a glass of water.

We Indians are also very polite, its just that we have different words to express the gratitude. My father says "Jeetay raho" or bless you when offered a glass of water, we use, "khush raho", "tera bhala ho", "Jiyu putar, "Haanji", "Auntyji", "Uncleji", all the elders call beta, beti to everyone. This is from Punjab and Delhi, all delhites will understand what I'm saying.

Recently in Mumbai the first time I noticed that a guy knocked my 6 yr old daughter by mistake, he turned and did touch her knees (the gesture not exactly...like you touch elders feet) which was a way for his saying sorry, the same happened with my mom in law at airport and my husband said Bombayites do that, its a way for them to say sorry to ladies, young girls.

I'm sure other Indian states, languages will have their own way, language of expression, but politeness exsists in India too and its not only in Canada!

ok Galat matalab nikalne wale bolenge yeh to Mumbai walon ki chal he..pehle laat maro phir chance lo....:(
I thought this was the practice all over India. You are right, Though many a times I get embarassed for involuntarily trying to make gesture of touching feet along with "sorry" when I accidentally knock someone (man or woman, child or older person). So far have been lucky for not getting "Jute" for 1) knocking some one 2) then trying to touch to show the expression of apology (especially if lady is wearing short skirt).

BTW, is it still taboo to use left for eating if cleaning with right? May be that's why we don't see too many left handers from Southern India (at least in cricket)

We (tamils) actually use the right hand as two hands. While tearing the roti we grab the portion to be torn by the first 3 fingers while the other 2 fingers will hold the roti in a fixed locked position.
And we are not just rice eaters. We are the ones who invented :
Parota (which is like Roti ), DOsa, Adai, Utapam, Poori (known as Batura in NI), boli etc. which are like Roti in diameter.
People who are left handed always use spoon while eating or they may eat with their right hand. If you must know, it is very hard for a left handed tamil to get married in Tamilnadu. Many people refuse to give them brides for obvious reasons. If you would have followed my posts for the past couple of years, Tamils are one of the most conservative people in India, though they are one of the cleverest in India. I know of many people who tave taken their left handed child to the doctor to have them switch them to right handed. And many Tamils who are left handed have actually migrated to Canada or have gone on H1B/GC?Citizenship to USA as they are rediculed and seen with a big lens in India.
Peace
