Last time I was in India, we went to Tirupathi and had masala dosas at "Bhima's palace" in Tirumala. Its a resturant within a hotel with the same name. The dosas and the sambhar were out of this world, really really good.
There was also a restaurant on the way back to the airport where we had some traditional south indian breakfast and it was amazing.
The thing is even if you manage to find restaurants that make good dosais and idlis in Toronto, you can never find the kind of sambar or chutney here. At least I never have. The closest I came was "Andhra Palace" on Oak Tree road in Edison, New Jersey.
The quest continues...

Are you there?
Andhra palace on Oaktree road ...!! ..is the best southy food joint in US is guess ...the Mahatma Gandhi plaza in Edison has other joints too but nothing comes close . Wonder if any other members have sugeestions for good southy food elsewhere ?
in Delhi there was this "hyped" southern joint in Marriot alled Dakshin , probably the most expensive restaurant in delhi ....it serves only southy food ,...and is supposed to be the best .... the moment you enter they will come and put some chutney on your plate ( so that you cannot run away after looking at the menu and the prices ) ...so we order the cheapest dosa on the fare ...Rs 800 ...and the dosa comes ... only dosa ... and the waiter politely asks Sir, would you like some sambar also? .... sambar is Rs 250 for small katori .... we had a blast in laughing our way to glory ...the food was great ...but the style to fleece customers was exquisite !! and experience in itself !!

What can be imagined, can be achieved.
A born Punjabi, spent whole life in Chennai-the idly capital of the world-and now in Canada and looking for 'real' ethnic south Indian flavour.
Have tried all the joints. The closest one is the Sarvana Bhavan. Of course, no where near to its parents in Chennai but pretty close.
I can only say one thing about the south Indian food-it is God's gift to gastric juices (originally by Jeeves).

dosa and idly:
a food you eat and then go farting your butts off. imagine in a packed elevator you try to be a "hovercraft", wishing everone has lost the smelling power due to some cold.
Yes Sarvana Bhavan has really good food...
Sure Does,
We ate there during our TO trip

No Mami's around. MTR's parippu podi.. haven't seen them. All I see is the instant dosa mix. But Dosa's dont taste good without the chutney/ sambhar / mulloha podi.. And the usual channa masala. I have had so much of those, I am sure that now, if one were to take my blood sample, 33% of it would be a chemical called ChMa (Channa-Masala)
Recipes... please, I would be delighted. The best ones I have had are the ones from Nandini on Airport Rd / CMH Rd. I managed to find something in Phoenix, AZ (was from Ambika), but that fared poorly to Nandini.
Here is wishing you the very best in your Canada move. If you do land in Calgary, look me up. I have also written two posts on a few things that helped me integrate here. You may consider reading them (go to the search in Charcha, and type anandramnath in the user name). Also feel free to email me if you need specific info. I can tell you one thing..life in Canada is a lot different from the US.

Please spare yourself the trouble of sending those snaps.. I dont think I can handle them.
Actually, I moved here because I couldn't find work here. I did not have a clue as to what to expect, but it turned out well.
Now, I seem to like Calgary better than Toronto, as people are a lot friendlier here, plus, I guess with no PST, relatively lower taxes, relatively lower rents, and lots of jobs, this seems to be the place people are flocking to.
I do miss the ubiquitous Sri Lankan Video stores of Mississauga / TO, watching Saptaswarangal and Arattai Arangam. Have always wanted to visit Auto-wa / Mun-tree-all, but suddenly, it seems so far.
Yes, Stampede is in full swing, and culminates this Sunday (Jul-18). The highlight was this 'hoot' dude from Texas who rode all the way (approx 3000 kms).
MishtarIndia!
Your post on Mariott, New Delhi was absolutely hilarious. 800 bucks for Dosa.. surely, you are kidding me...but then the 250 for the sambhar takes the cake.
Jake...
Dude, I am trying (my best) not to get hooked to a local here. All I can expect then is Alberta beef steak on the dinner plate. Last year, I was invited over to a Christmas dinner, and all I could do was nibble on the mashed potatoes. As a vegetarian, I find myself in the Beef country of the world.
