Well said! Many times it is to do with an individual's perception.

While dealing with desis don't go with facial expressions. They might not have developed the artificial expressions like the people born and brought up here. But they are naturally kind hearted and helpful.
For me Gore munh ke mithe, dil ke khote
Their attitude is just pretentious. While desis are genuine and noble.

How can you generalize? I know many 'gore' that are genuine and noble, and too many desis that are pretentious.

I like your comment 'dont go with facial expressions..." I guess smiling is an artificial expression?

Welcome your thoughts and comments.

Having worked in retail when I was in school and watching other customers while shopping myself (especially in Surrey) i have noticed that most caucasian people (or any non indian) tend to smile, make small talk about the weather with the cashier. I have noticed exceptions too, if a customer appears surly, tired or distracted or just not interested. However, as a rule, I have seen desis do not smile at the cashiers and they dont make small talk.

My husband has worked in a retail electronics shop frequented by desis and has told me countless stories about how desis will come and spend time with him asking questions about products and then tell him they will go buy from their friend/cousin/family/whatever in another store, but didnt want to waste that person's time with asking product information. I have seen desi customers haggle for 2 hours over a measly $2 reduction in price.

Did you experience same with young desis or rather second generation...Here is the thing about communication and smiling etc...
when a Desi migrates, it is difficult to adjust to the culture..and desis in Brampton stores are most likely new immimgrants. Even if they try to exchange pleasantries most of the customers won't even understand it forget about responding. Now if you go to India and try to smile at stranger you will get frown in response.
I think this is not the case with newer generations. I have come across countless young cashiers, shuttle drivers exchanging nice conversations irrespective of desi or kazakastani...bottomline..when in Brampton don't expect pleasantries also don't get surprised if a desi buys a candy for an ugly toddler because he/she finds the baby very cute.
