Hello

We have reached an agreement. Like many other desi bandus we will go for it................. . However thanks to the forum, we will take their advice and adapt to the situation.

We will will land in April/May05. Arrange accomodation .
My wife and daughter will stay, but i will come back
My wife is currently prepairing her GMAT and she will look for job and do a part time MBA in Canada.

I will finally settle after 1+ years . By this time we would have some steady income and some canadian education. I will then look for job and do part time MBA.

Any suggestions on where to look for place to stay? We dont have family or friends in Canada? I have no clue ?
I searched the internet and see names like Mssisauga/Brampton/Scarborough/Richmond Hill/Thornhill coming again again. Where to go? We like to be be close to my Indian community.

"When I was @ Dubai I was the Financial Controller and had 03 CAs reporting 2 me . Here I don't put my CA qualification on my card as I m into Travels business. Bas yahaan par kaam apna hai . My wife also works . If u take my advise there s no other place like the ME 2 earn money "

Thus spake a close aquaintance when I landed @ Toranto ........ He was 40 years of age having own business in Canada .

The money u ve mentioned is "good" even by ME standards .And seems like u ve been around only for 2 years plus . Why not spend another 3 years here as sm1 has suggested (u have 2 stay 4 only 2 /5 years 2 maintain PR status) earn more moolah and then take a relaxed road 2 migration .Works 2 ways -- u get more expereinced in ur own field working in Dubai and develop a cushion also not 2 take survival jobs initially .

What u plan is also apt --a friend has donr a similar thing. His wife s n Canada while the guy is here .They meet quarterly and await his wife 2 settle so that he can join her ..........

Dear Manasvi.. Cpy Desi Bandus

Thnks. Will keep that in mind before taking final decision.
I have some questions regarding accuracy of my budgeting and can take your suggestions since u have taken similar decisions in past.

I have kept my budget as per following forecasted expenses.
____________________________

$6500 for electronics/furniture/moving Cost at location Toronto.
Initial cost incrd to settle family. Is this correct?

I will need to buy 21"TV/VCR/DVD/Microwave/Coffee Table/Dinning Table/Sofa-2seater/1Child Bed+Matrs/computer-2nd hand/Computer Table+chair/curtains.
I believe Fridge/Stove/Washing Machine is provided by the aprtment owner. All aprtments have inbuilt closets.

____________________________

For other variable expenses i have kept $2500 pm. Reason-
1.Rent-$850 1BR/2.Telephone-$50/3.Cable-$50/4.DayCare-$850/5.Transport-$200/6.Internet-$40/7.Newspaper-$10/8.Grocery-$300/9.Misc(5% of above)-$118.
Total - apprx CAD 2500 PM x 12 months = CAD apprx 30000

____________________________
Our total budget is working out like this .

1. Cost of Tickets - CAD 04150
2. New Furniture - CAD 06500
3. Variable Expenses- CAD 30000
____________________________
Total 1Yr Budget - CAD 40650
____________________________

You can save a lot if you buy most of your stuff from dubai itself. Its little hassle but then its worthit.

Manjeet ,

Which items out of the following wud u recommend 2 buy 4m the ME and which items wud u recommend 2 get @ Canada ..........
1. Beds
2. Couch
3. Mattresses
4. Television
5. Fridge
6. DVD player / music system
7. cupboard
9. Kitchen ware

Is it cost effective 2 transport the goods or dispose them here and buy over there saving the transport charges ??

How much wud b the transport costs of the above mentioned items 4m dubai 2 toranto ??

I think Ansh ur budgets are close 2 the actual approximations ....... Residents can 2nd r opinion .

Dear Ansh,

First of all Congrats for geeting Visa....

I am a Dxb based Canadian PR holder. Let me put some bare facts to you..

You had mentioned that you earn Rs 2 lakhs ie, around Dhs 20,000. This is the amount you take home, According to Canadian standards add 30% since there is no tax in Dxb..that makes it to Rs 2.3 lakhs. This is equivalent to 8,000 CAD

This kind of money is Very Very difficult for a desi to make it in Canada..they call it a job of 100k

First of all make up your mind that Canada is the place where you are going to spend the rest of your life, unless you have decided to settle down permanently...dont think about it. If your aim is to make money..be in Dubai.

Then comes the harsh reality...I dont know your edu background. I guess you are professioanlly qualified. This makes things even worse...The more qualified you are...the more difficult it is to get jobs....

With the kind of luxury you are affording in Dubai..dont think of getting those in Canada, at least for the first few years.

You had mentioned about doing MBA..this will add to your disqualification to many jobs..coz you might be more qualified than your prospective " Canadian" Boss. If you think you can get into a management position with higher qualification, you are mistaken.

Canada is not USA, where skill sets are respected. Even though Canada is ethnically diverse, 90% of the top corporations are managed by so called " Original Canadians". You cant blame it, this is their country, they have their own rights. You are coming as a guest and are given acceptance in their society by them.

If you are hands on...willing to work hard...doesn't look for big career growth...then you will survive. You will feel the pinch, when you are 40+, you will get used to working under 25 yr old "Native Canadian".

Migration is good for the next generation. Your son will be born and broght up there, after living there for 18 years, he will have the frequency of original Canadian...like Western outlook, Canadian Accent, lifestyle etc...then he will be accepted in the society...Indian origin will not be questioned by anyone...because your son will talk like and work like a Canadian.

People like you and me who are born and brought up in India will only have Indian outlook and Indian accent. Hence your qualifications experience will not be counted much.

+ve side of Canada :

Equal human rights
Good infrastructure
Good business prospects
Investor friendly
Good standard of living
Less poverty, pollution
Skilled workers are respected
Blue collar job easy to find
Dishwashers can also have a decent living unlike India

- ve sides :

Your professional qualifications are not accepted
New immigrants cant find good paying jobs
No family values
35% tax
Doctors appointment will take few weeks
By that time..you might be history
No savings in life
You will have to slog till 65
Career growth not at par with " Original Canadians"
At 45 will have to work under 25 year old " Canadian"

You have plenty of your own reasons to decide your way forward. Just beware of the harsh realities of Qualified Immigrants.

Note that only 10% of Professionally qualified Immigrants succeed getting good jobs and good salary... If you are extremely lucky...you could be one of them...else you are history....

There is also an option of coming back to Dubai..after getting Canadian passport........you could earn more than what you are earning now.

Do send me a msg or mail ..I will give you first hand details you require.

Deep
