Hi. Can someone tell me if the following is true? I have heard that the cost of importing a Toyota Corolla 2002 car that was bought in USA for $15000, comes to about $1500-$2000 CDN?
I have been seriously thinking of bringing my car from USA to Canada. But is it true that the cost of modifications, Customs duties and Taxes can be that high?

I referred to this page: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/E/pub/cp/rc4140/rc4140-e.html

There is an example on that page (for importing a 2002 Buick Park Avenue).
I am confused, can someone tell me if I am looking at the right info?

Thanks
Aseem.

15K of 2002 is valued at 12K now in 2004

So if you import it in 2004 it will be 12000* 1.33 = 15960
15960 + 100 = 16060 (100 for car having ac)
16060 * .07 = 1124

This is the import duty
Import fee = 182
modifications - 300

so your total would be 1600 appx (cdn )

PS: If this car is a part of "goods to follow" then only 500$

Thanks Smiley. But can you explain this big difference in expenses? I mean how come is it so low if I mention it in goods to follow?

Also, If I am driving into Canada in that car, how come will it be "goods to follow"? It is not following me, it is accompanying me. Can you tell me how to go about it?

Thanks.

Goods to follow is the settlers effects , you submit a list when you land in canada the first time that this stuff will follow you . If that was not done anything you get other than that is subject to import duty , so if you are landing for the first time , you can import it in canada without paying the duty or inform them that you would import it later but have to get the information stamped. If not , then you pay the import duty when you import it later .

If you landing for the first time , then you can import it without paying the import fee

Hope this helps
