Guys a word of caution regarding COMPAQ...
You will be restricted in how you want to use ur laptop. Suppose if you want to change yor OS (e.g., from Windows 98 to Windows XP :D...you know how), then most likely u cant do that with Compaq ; at least you couldnt do that..Toshiba, DELL gives you that flexibility

But if you want a real good deal then maybe you should design and build your own laptop (of cos the choice will be limited to a certain set of features...but at least that would be a good deal). It all depends on what you want to use ur Laptop for...gaming, casual use, surfing the net or programming (aka a replacement for your desktop)...

If you are price conscious, them maybe ebay.ca/com would be a good place to start.

I am planing to buy CD writer or burner, along with DVD burner. Do we have to buy separately or is there anything together. My question is: which is the best brand, quality-wise as well as economically.
Thanks in advance
Shan

What model laptop do you have ? You need a DVD burner (sometimes referred to as a combo drive by some sites)

Too many cooks spoil the broth !!

But Chandresh s query needs every cook to put in his recipe aint it ?? ;)

As rightly pointed out its hard disk +DVD v/s INTEL .

Not 2 forget Compaq has a DDR which is better than the conventional RAM.

In case the usage was some heavy application (like an Oracle server) I would recommend the Intel machine for sake of over heating in the AMD case.

However in a normal office users case the DVD writer and extended hard disk are more of use than the processor's capability as most of the times it will be underused......... plus as time goes by hard disk space will be more usable to load and unload new software .

I vote for Compaq .

Manasvi.

PS : ON for my own knowledge -- Does the AMD chip restrict multi booting or tthe OS cant be reloaded after formatting ???

Nope Manasvi
It all depends on what type of BIOS one has. My friend had a compaq desktop ..It wouldnt allowe me to load Linux (aka change it)..I could either load their silly pre-lodaded stuff or I couldnt..I hope the situation has changed now....

Hi Guys

Thanks for your inputs. I have bought the Compaq yesterday at 1,444.99 and FS warranty for three years at $350

Now to the second part. I need to buy a wireless router and a wireless card for my desktop. Which Sasta/Sundar/Tikau do you suggest and where can I get a deal on it?

And last one (for the time being)- till the time I get a wireless router, I wish to connect my new Compaq laptop to the corded internet. Will it be simple as plugging in and it will recognise the internet by itself, or do I have to set it up as was originally done by Sympatico guy four years ago in my earlier laptop?

Chandresh

congrats for your new laptop.
For wireless routers/cards .. i recommend Linksys.. they have good and reliable stuff as they r made by Cisco. You also have the option of upgrading to Bell's wireless cable modem which will reduce the extra cable from the DSL modem to the wireless router..

I don't think you need to set the DSL modem again.. just take the Ethernet wire from old laptop and put it in the new laptop.. ;)

:D
