Now to the second part. I need to buy a wireless router and a wireless card for my desktop. Which Sasta/Sundar/Tikau do you suggest and where can I get a deal on it?

Go for Linksys all the way.
It is slightly more expensive than D-Link and others, but it is really more reliable.
Also, I think a while back D-Link routers had issues with their firmware.
Linksys ones are more secure that way - and security is the number 1 reason why people buy a router.

Make sure you get the one that has NAT included.
Without NAT capability, you won't get the security - you will just get a hub with a DHCP built in.
The ones without NAT are cheaper than the ones with NAT, but go for the NAT one.

And last one (for the time being)- till the time I get a wireless router, I wish to connect my new Compaq laptop to the corded internet. Will it be simple as plugging in and it will recognise the internet by itself, or do I have to set it up as was originally done by Sympatico guy four years ago in my earlier laptop?
Do you have a regular corded router?
If not, then you will have to install the DSL modem drivers on the laptop and then connect through that.
You would have got a CD from Sympatico - install the modem using that and it will also create the connection for you.

Thanks for the quick advice all of you guys. Now I am getting the real benefits of CD membership!!!!

Yes, I do have normal corded router which I have been using for three over years and have presently connected a laptop and a desk top with it. However, since I have moved from an apartment to a house recently, I am finding it difficult to use that by spreading the wires on the floors from one room to another and therefore want to go in for a wireless router.

By the way, I also need to buy a wireless card for my DESKTOP - which ones do you advice? Aprroximate cost? Is a USB wireless card good enough or should I go for one which has to be installed inside to get better performance?

For laptops you should go for PCMCIA wireless card or USB card.. Usually its good to keep the USB port free for other stuff like memory key or external mouse.. or external hard drives..

For desktop also USB is good because you have the freedom to put it on the table or to a place where you get good reception.. The one which is installed inside may not get signals correctly ig you place it in a closed area..

Approximate cost depends on where you buy it from..
at http://www.tigerdirect.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK --or-- http://www.factorydirect.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK its about $40 for the wireless card.. you can also find a router/card combo for a price of about $100.

Go for g..

For the laptop, I will suggest a PCMCIA card.
Those are very portable and work well for laptops.
For the PC, you can do a USB card, assuming you have enough USB ports available.
Older PCs had only 1 USB port, which was usually USB 1.0 - depends on how old your PC is.
If your PC has a USB 2.0 compatible port, then you can go for a USB card.
If you are running out of USB ports on the PC, you can purchase a USB hub, which will allow you to connect several USB devices at one time.

Also, if you are switching from a regular wired router to a wireless one, I will suggest look into security more because wireless routers are less secure than wired ones, unless you change some settings.
With a wireless router, your neighbours (or anyone passing by your house) can catch your wireless signal and connect to your network.
Most people who have wireless routers end up installing a Firewall (like ZoneAlarm) t prevent this type of problems.
ZoneAlarm is free and a very good firewall to have.

If you have young kids, it can also function as a "cyber nanny" by restricting or denying access to certain websites, instant messengers, etc.

So you can have two layers of protection "coming-in" and two layers "going out".

It is not a bad price, I think.
But it depends on what you want to use it for, because the two big limitations are the RAM and the hard drive.
256 MB RAM is really useless now-a-days.
At the very least, you should have 512 - 1 Gig is ideal.
Also, not much can be stored in 12GB now-a-days.
You should ideally have 25GB and above.

But then, if all you want to use it for is some basic document processing, personal accounts, email, etc. then it doesn't matter that much.
