Unfortunately it does not boot in any mode. But the Win XP was SP2 enabled and was updated regularly.

Did you try Last Known Good Configuration option?
If it doesn't work, use your XP CD to boot the system from CD and use Repair option.

Any Suggestions?
My Thinkpad froze while I was working and when I tried to reboot, it won't boot properly. It shows as if the Windows XP is starting but then gives me options of various starting modes like Safe Mode, Previous Mode etc. However, even when I select any of these modes the process is repeated.
Any thoughts?

I tend to agree with you. I do have the latest AV but how do you clean a machine that does not boot?

Try overtaking child's imagination
Go to IBM.com and look for an authorized repair center near your place. Is your laptop still in warranty

We will find a way or we will make one
check the AV vendor web site and they might have a bootable diskette or CD that will load the AV program and do the cleanup without loading the OS from you HDD.
