An interesting perspective on the WalMart model. Although its about the American market, Walmart's growing dominance in Canada makes it relevant for us too.

Ummm BL... put it this way.....Due to Walmart, I am surviving in this town...Its my next door neighbour here ... It would be better if WAL-MART changes it name to a Chinese sounding name.
Afterall..90% of goods in Walmart are manufactured in China.... Think abt this
A set of 6 Philipshead screwdrivers....
An American Brand selling for 4.00 USD
A Chinese brand selling beside it for .....88c !!!!!
Now who is so "patriotic" to buy the 4.00$ set when he can have the same set of 88c...( not me )

I'm not really taking sides here and I have nothing against the big W. I shop there too and yeah, their prices are definately lower which helps my bottomline.
There's a lot however that goes on "behind the scenes" to keep those rollbacks coming. And I just found it interesting reading that side of the story.

Interesting. Especially when you consider the fact that the walton family is amongst the richest in the world...about 17 billion each amongst 5 of them. Wonder if they shop at wal-mart.
I remember hearing once that a biz that either targets the poor consumer OR the very rich are better insulated against economic cycles. Makes sense...people downgrade during a bad period so at the lower end...the clientele probably increases during downward economic cycles. On the other hand the very rich are rarely concerned about economic cycles(the Rockefellers only got richer during the great depression).
The really rich also know how to cover all bases...e.g: the westons...owners of weston bread AND Holt Renfrew (the Westons also own Loblaws and no frills..i think)
