1. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how long it takes to get FBI clearance once the fingerprints are submitted to them. (I am presently working in the US on an H-1B visa).

2. Also, where does one go to have the fingerprinting done? Are they special places? I am going ahead and getting the FBI Clearance in anticipation of getting my preliminary assessment in the next 2 months. (File Number was assigned in July 2004).

3. Also is it correct that the FBI Clearance is only valid for 6 months?

Thanks in advance

It takes about 8-10 weeks. If you are lucky you may get within about 6 weeks.

You can go to your local police station. Note that not all police stations do FBI fingerprinting for Canadian Immigration purposes. We had to do our FP twice and went to our local police stations. On the second time, one police station refused to do Canadian Immigration FP, another said they will do only if we live or work in that city. You can also check for Fingerprinting under the yellow pages - some private agencies do FP.

That is correct - your FBI FP is valid for only 6 months, so if your case is not decided within that period, you may be asked to do them again.

I think ours was done in about 5 weeks.
I am not exactly sure because we went through a consultant and they handled all that for us - we just sent them the fingerprint forms and they took it from there.

You should go to your local police station with the forms and the instructions from the CIC booklet.
In our case, they charged a fee of $10 and did it correctly.
I think this kind of request is quite common because they knew what to do.

Yes.
What I did was request several sets of additional forms (they are provided by the FBI at no charge).
That way, if you get notice from CHC that your fingerprint report has expired and you need to get new ones done, you can get the fingerprinting done right away and send them to FBI for the report.
If you don't have additional forms, you will waste 3 weeks in ordering them from the FBI.

It would be waste of time and money to get the FBI fp before you have asked to do so

I had to do it twice myself cuz the first one expired , Had i known earlier i wont had given them the first set initially although officially its asked to submit you can skip that step.

Yes they do expire within 6 months , and can be done with any notary who ha the FBI FP Card, this card is the key and it costs $10 to get it done.

Yeah, that's a good catch, Ashish30.
My lawyer also told us not to do anything in "anticipation" and do thins only when CHC asks for it.
Like some people do FBI reports, medicals or pay ROPR fee in advance - our lawyer said not to do any of this in advance.
I think it simply confuses the case.
