Hi, my friend is canadian citizen working in the US on H1B, he doesnot have h1b visa on his passport, only have h1 approval notice from INS, there 's no problem for him to travel between US and canada, but he wonders if it is ok for him to travel to other countries and return to US by using h1 approve notice? i heard that there is no need of visa for canadian to travel to US, is that true? any input is highly appreciated. thanks in advance.
He does not need a visa to enter USA from anywhere . he should however have his I-94 showing his status in US

If you are traveling by pvt. vehicle, it is necessary to take I94 at border or you can slip thru.

Yes, it is what you think it is.
And you are right that Canadian Citizens are not given that.
Only citizens of the "lesser" countries are given that

I don't think what has been posted above is accurate. To the best of my knowledge, your friend DOES need a visa stamped in his passport to go to the US from Canada or elsewhere. A canadian citizen entering the US does NOT need a visa ONLY if his stay is temporary (not more than 90 days). Otherwise a canadian citizen(on an H-1) technically DOES need a visa. You can confirm this with the US consulate website amcits.com
Of course if you have a really nice officer at the port of entry you could get by I guess, but it is not a given..
NO visa required for cdn citizens , It is a status that they need to get . They will have H1-B stamp ( at POE ) and not visa from consulate and handed a I-94 showing the expiry date ..
