can someone tell me the type of technology used for mobile phones. If it is GSM can I get my mobile from India and use it after buying a SIM card locally in Toronto?

CDMA phones do not have a chip. GSM phones use chips. As mentioned above only tri band phones will work here, but there is some kind of signal problems with phones that are outside of Canada.
Also the local service providers have various schemes when you buy services from them. That turns out to be cheaper. Depending on your needs you might get a phone free for a two year term!!!
