My wife and I came to Canada as students almost two decades ago and were students for a long time. Finally luck and with the help (contact) of some very close friends (canadians) we were able to land in very good positions. Me in Engineering and she in finance. We see our status change from Student /spouse visa to landed immigrats and then as Canadian Citizens. This country has given us a lot and we give our best to this land. I am very happy about my decision that I had made so many years ago. Life was not always easy nor was it extremely hard. Once you have good friends, you wil feel at home!

Are you there?
1) What province you studied in
2) What degree you and your wife got in Canada
I did my M.A.Sc from Ottawa and Ph.D from UBC. Wife did her Master degree from McGill.
3) How you found the job and what difficulties if you had any along the way
We both found our jobs in our subject areas. Mine in Mechanical Engineering and Hers in Economics. Like I had mentioned before, networking is very important. Blindly applying for job ads does not work. You need to connect with other people (Desis / non-desis / through desis). I agree that for a new comer it is a daunting task. But these days there are several forums (like this one) for people to connect and discuss. Eventually, one will find their way. Most of us had.
4) What you do currently.
I am senior engineer with federal Govt. My wife is a senior analyst with a bank.
5) What your advice to others in a similar situation would be
Qualify yourself locally , Obtain certification (e.g. P.Eng.) if you are an engineer. Network and connect with others who can really help you with your resume / interview skills and leads on job positions.
