unless you passed your CPA BEFORE LANDING in Canada (such a silly rule - if you are CPA before landing, you have only one challange exam to take of local CA, if you become CPA after you land, you have to go thru it all - as if the CPA before and after landing is different!!!!)
Chandresh

Not a silly rule Chandresh. If this rule were not in place, many Canadians would write the CPA, and then use the reciprocity route to get their CA designation in Canada, bypassing the Canadian Institute's Uniform Final Examination ("UFE" ) .

If you look at it differently, why doesn't an immigrant write the CPA before landing in Canada? Should be a part of their 'preparation' before landing.

Its not impossible to pass the UFE either. When you think about an accountant who is supposed to have 'extensive' practical / real life experience, the UFE should be a cakewalk.

I also don't agree with your comments that 'accountants' are the worst off among immigrants. Within that group of accountants, if you look at auditors, its probably better right now than its ever been here in North America.

I agree about auditors - BUT ONLY IF YOU HAVE HAD RECENT AUDIT EXPERIENCE. I have been an auditor for 10 years - but not in last ten years, but the first 10 years of statutory and internal audits has no value - not even having worked with E&Y (even E&Y Toronto is not ready to consider that experience!)

For last six months I have been trying to get a 'seat' for doing my CA here - am willing to go all the way thru. But all I hear is 'no opportunities currently' or 'they are interested only in taking fresh college graduates'

Well for me it does make a difference. When I landed in 2000 Jan in Toronto, I had two job offers and one promise to be considered if I stayed in Toronto - all in 9 days of my stay here. When I finally started looking for jobs in Dec 2001 - well you know the story........Not a single job in 3 years!

Maybe there is something to what you are saying.
I think most people I refer to earlier got their jobs during the latter phase of highly optimistic dotcom boom years. Your 2 job offers fall in the same period, I think.
Theres also the fact that, boom or no, there are people that will get the jobs they want and some who will not. Effort or Providence? Maybe a combination of the same? Maybe not.

You talk of communication skills as key to success in some other thread then you change it to effort and later may be hard core skills. Infact it is very difficult to understand why few get jobs here and rest of the immigrants suffer. So if that is the case it boils down to what chandresh had said....boom in the industry.......if you are part of that industry there are jobs for you, it is important to have hard core skills of booming industry..correct??

True, and there is a reason for that too. Auditing and accounting standards have changed a lot over the past 10 years.

I presume by 'seat' you are referring to the term of service, which in turn is required for registration with the Institute.

Get a list of designated training offices from the Ontario Institute's website (there are hundreds of them) and send personalized emails to as many as you can (most of these firms have their own websites). Your Resume should talk about your 'internal controls' experience rather than financial management experience.

While some firms may think of you as not being a good fit, there is a considerable requirement in the market right now, so getting a 'term of service' shouldn't be that difficult.

in fact accountants are in good demand in canada, australia and NZ.

i think CIMA and CMA have some agreement wherein CIMA is considered equivalent to CMA. Good idea to do it before arrival in Canada. But first call CMA to check. Then check with a few companies hiring CMA's as well.
