My friend recently got a laid off and he is planning to apply for unemployment and want to stay india for couple of months.
What is the way ?

Have your friend contact Employment Insurance (once he is receiving benefits ) to advise them he is going to India. They will likely discontinue the benefits for the duration of the period he is gone. The purpose of collecting insurance benefits is to give you income while you look for another job, not to travel.

If one gets EI, what is the amount and for how long? Does the govt try and get him a job/training etc?

Im not positive, but the maximum anyone can get is $416/week (depending on ur salary, geographical location and number of hours/weeks worked). Im not sure about length of time either.. The govt can try to assist if the recipient comes forward to request help. The EI reps can give you names of agencies/people to contact to assist with job search or retraining if you are eligible for the same.
