You sound quite naive. Let me try and educate you. Having taken CS 101 -301 does not qualify someone as an expert in every language out there.

Being a .Net guy I'll give some examples from the .Net side. Does a Java guy understand .Net remoting?? Would he/she understand how localization is implemented in .Net etc. etc etc.

Ask a Java/Non MS guy to work with ATL COM. You get an HRESULT error - have fun figuring those out.

There's a reason why MS guys don't normally get hired for Java roles and vice versa.

Another example: A cardio thoracic surgeon is not qualified to operate on the brain. Just being a 'surgeon' is not enough.

If this is not enough for you to understand then perhaps you should be in another field. Let me suggest pottery making. :D

Alexm,
jahnavi asked a very simple question. There is nothing sarcastic about it, for eg if I have used Oracle as a language for 6-7 yrs, do you think it will be very difficult for me to work on t-sql or db2. Been there done that...
when microsoft introduced C# in .net, they specifically designed the language keeping Java developers in mind.
Few of the greatest characterstics which the employer look for in a developer is Attitude and Team Work.
No matter how good you are if you are missing these qualities, you are got to go..however skillful you may be .
I am sure if you have a carrer spanning more than 5 yrs now, you must have moved from one It field to .net . After all .net is 4 yrs old.
After reading your post you have still not answered the basic question what jahnavi asked..Are you into amway/quixstar marketing:D

Hi Ritu,

What you said is right. But think about this - some recruiters do not have enough technical knowledge. So sometimes you see ads like Wanted .net expert with 10 years experience etc. Besides, with the market being more of an employers market in the last few years, recruiters tend to advertise for a guy who has weird combination of technical skills although you may not find a lot of people with that combination.

Ritu,

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you on jahnavi's post. Multiple question makrs are construed as being very rude/condescending in netiquette. Pleading ignorance is also something here is something I won't buy, especially for someone in the IT field, i.e. more associated with computers than most other people in other walks of life.

Also, regarding hiring people - I have to disagree with you on team work/attitude etc. There are very few companies that have the luxury of hiring people based only on technical competence (in any language) and the qualities you mentioend. Most need a particular skillset, for e.g. 5 yrs J2EE experience, Struts framework etc etc. Saying that I am a VB.Net programmer with 5 yrs and good attitude will most likely not get me very far when applying for a C++ job. Remember, this is not the utopian situation we'd like where a company is that far sighted.

There are reasons why Don Box wrote the huge, and very complex, book on COM. If it were that simple to switch between technolgies books like his would not sell at all. Again, I talk of most of us average developers who take time to get up to speed with a new technology, framework etc.

Another rebuttal :) IMO, MS did not introduce C# with the sole aim of converting hordes of Java developers. Just having a semi colon at the end of a statement does not make the two languages similiar. The .Net BCL is hugely different from the J2SE/J2EE frameworks.

Lastly...dont see any mention of Anway whatever. Anyways, sitting here in Bangalore and doing relatively well I have no need to sell snake oil ;)

You might be right ,their are many Qualified immigrants in North America who are doing odd jobs ,they are working in Resturants, Gas Stations and Super Markets but it doesnot mean that every person who enters North America will face the same situation since it depends on the persons luck as well.

I know some Oracle Developers from Pakistan who are teaching Oracle in Institutes of Toronto and they had no teaching experience or background. So much depends on luck as well, it is true that at the beginning you might face several problems for some years but remember that after every problem their is ease. You should not lose hope and should try your best.

Remember ,Americans and Canadians only like those who are honest, hardworking and sincere and if you are experienced and qualified as well, then it is a sonay pay sohaga.

My suggestion is that you should first apply for Employment Visa. If you apply for Immigration and after arriving Canada ,you donot get any job ,then it will be a great problem for you.

I hope you are getting my point.

Regards,

Guys ,

I am reviving this old thread once again . I m currently @ Hyderabad undergoing courses on Oracle Apps Tech / ABAP 4 and Datawarehousing as suggested by some esteemed members earlier . This is 1 month b4 coming 2 Canada .

Here the Training market is very hot with close 2 100 Institutes in 3-4 buildings and training on everything from SAP to Oracle APPS to Java to UNIX to - u name it and at very earthly prices .

I wonder hows the DWH (Informatica / Cognos / Ab Initio ) doing in North America currently as here its quite hot .

I was surprized 2 find SQL Server DBA training almost absent despite having a good demand on monster for Canada .

Those who are already in the IT market in Canada , pls share comments .

Manasvi.

PS : How s Oracle Apps Technical market I wonder ??
