Guys help me on this please - Im having sleepless nights .
1. I am (added info-32 yrs old ) a certifed Oracle DBA as well as Developer(OCP) besides a Certified Java programmer (SCJP).
2. I am working as Oracle Developer-DBA for the past 06 years .
3. Additionally I have finance bacground having a Masters and ICWA.
4. To upgrade myself in the next 5 months I have the following options:
a) Certify on Sun Solaris UNIX thereby consolidating the Oracle DBA role. This adds on to my skills & experience and chances of getting through an Interview are high , but the job opportunities may be less.
b) Prepare & certify on MCSD.NET diversifying my skills . I wont have experience but job opportunities are higher .
c) Move over towards Oracle Financials . Consolidate on earlier experience and diversify in a related field. Not sure about job openings though .
Since I have the time now for preparing what is the best option ?Appreciate your sugestions.
Manasvi.
PS: I feel having a discussion forum on MCSD.net is a great idea Priyank.
How old are you?
if you are past 35.. getting into completely new field just to get a job is kinda counter-productive.. s/w development is notoriously age-discriminatory..
Oracle DBA opportunities aren't getting any lesser.. it was always middle of the path .. stable career.. it's hard to train and even harder to loose DBAs ..
Oracle Financials or even SAP might be a good choice for ya.. look into SAP.. will ya?
.NET is exciting.. but it's not exactly screaming for candidates or anything.. and trust me if you go in post 35 without any real experience .. I would be very reluctant to let someone come in with that profile in my team ..
More importantly.. you should do what you like.. IT is good enough field and YOU WILL GET A JOB.. salary might be issue initially.. but if you are willing to work and if you are technically ok.. consulting.. US project, small startups, temperory work.. something or else will click.. but ultimately once you are on the bandwagon.. will it go where you want to go?? that my friend is what you have to decide.. I look outside open sky outside my office and wonder the same thing over and over again... Do I want to work for big company and play saap-seedi.. keep climbing corporate ladder just to get down along the back of some slippery snake .. or do I get adranalin rush by joining another start-up with exicting idea again and play build the castle.. sure it might get washed out by the waves.. but like Curly the wise cowboy once said.. ultimately that's 1 thing that one's gotta figure out.. Jobs and all be damned.. I say go for persuit of happiness... Go where your passion takes you.. you are changing your life.. coming to strange land.. do you just wanna be another immigrant trying to land a job..? Do what you're passionate about and everything else will follow.. and meanwhile journey will be much more interesting..
I'll tell you if and when I find my 1 thing..
Dear All,
This thread is really growing good.
I want to know more about SAP job scope in canada and which module.
I'm planning to do a certification course from SAP india and than land in canada.
Do i require good experience or as a fresher can do.
I have good exp. in java and oracle.
Many thanks
Baliyan
Manasvi,
Having worked in Oracle as DBA for so many years..I dont think that there is any dearth of jobs in Canada as well...
Regarding certification: Well for you it makes more sense to explore areas in Database/ datawarehousing/Mining side, ERP side etc rather than working in another field all together. Database/werehousing is here to stay, also with all the recent acquisition of Companies namely Siebel and People soft by oracle, it is the major competitor to SAP in Business front now.
For you exploring in SAP BW areas or Any other BW areas makes more sense. These are my 2 cents...
priyank3003, Thanks for all the posts regarding .net certification.I will definitely need a lot of assistance from you regarding training.
zCool,
Well altough I agree to some of your points, I am not really sure if changing your stream really is that difficult. After working in industry for 8-10 yrs, I dont think you need to join as a novice if you are learing a new technology, because after all it is just another language, and unless it is very different, you can still manage(thanks to google), and fare much better than a novice in IT field. For e.g Switching from Java to C# should'nt be that difficult or vice versa. The greatest advantage I see in doing the Certification is your base becomes solid and you can build on that.
I will still leave the floor open for your thoughts based on your experience...
Thanks a lot Zcool & Ritu,
I know once you are in a particular field its better to consolidate then diversify . I shall look into SAP closely .
Does any1 have any idea what certifications are available on SAP and who s training in India ?

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.
Manasvi,
As far as I know Siemens is the only authorized training center in India for SAP. Once you take SAP training thru them you can take the certification as well. All this of course comes with a price ...3 Lacs or so..
