I am trying 2 follow job postings on monster.ca and have the following observations & seek clarifications

1. Oracle jobs are very less as compared 2 SQL Server. R the Installations of SQL Server v high as compared 2 Oracle ??

2. Most of the jobs require very high skill sets and the jobs list almost everything from C++ to Unix to .net to Java ........... are these skill sets easily available in Canada . In other words - is there an over supply of highly skilled IT people in Canada ??

Manasvi.

On the contrary I did a search on seek.au for Oracle jobs in Aus. There were plenty of jobs there .

Just few tips for all folks who resrach for jobs on the website and not physically in Canada. This applies to all the jobs and not just IT jobs.

1) Some of the jobs advertised by recruitment agencies may not be the real jobs. Some of them advertise just to collect resumes and build their databases so when an opportunity comes they can research their databases and compile a list of candidates on short notice.

2) Somestimes, for one job multiple recruitment agencies may advertise. So you see ads by 3 to 4 agencies and you think these are 3 to 4 job openings but in fact it is one job and 3 to 4 agencies have got the contract to fill the job. Whichever agency's candidate gets selected gets the job. For the last few months, i am being contact for the same job by not less than 4 to 5 agencies. They don't even tell you the name of the company. But the moment they specified the location and industry in which the comapny works I would ask them is it so & so company?

Thanks Lana ,

I will keep your advice in mind .

That brings me 2 the 2nd part of my q- r the IT pros in Canada so advanced that recruiters ask for multitasking skills from C++ to UNIX to J2EE in the same job and leaving those speciaised in 1 namely Java or Oracle , high & dry ??

Also does SQL Server reign the Database market vs Oracle in Canada ?

I am not really sure about the field you are asking. Bu tin general, I have noticed that prior to tech bubble, specialists i.e. you needed one skill with in-depth knowledge, were preferred. Now, generalists who can wear lots of hats and have knowledge in multiple area are preferred. I am not a very technical person but what they call a functional person.

Well, asking for c++ to UNIX to J2EE is not strange. C++ and Java are OO languages, so if u know one, its easy to understand the other, just like if u know one RDBMS u can understand the other one. Also, those knowing J2EE know Java and any RDBMS (Oracle, Sybase, etc). Technology is getting advanced.

Not exactly...just because they are all OO languages does not mean a c++ guy can start developing J2EE frameworks the next day. Understanding the intricacies of a language takes time.

Similar for Databases also ........ I have been working in Oracle for 06 years and still I may not know many things in it ........SQL Server may b similar but Im sure it will take its own learning curve .........

To all those who can respond to this , kindly clarify my 1 doubt :

R the IT folks in Canada more skilled than the 1s in India .........I know its a generic q but on an average per se ?? Wud u say that an average Canadian IT guy is superior to and average Engineering grad Indian IT guy?

Regards,

Manasvi.
