For an outsider / prospective Immigrant its generally a high learning curve to know the IT MARKET SITUATION in Canada - the grinds , the opportunities or the lack of them .
Wud CD IT veterans please share which skills are the most in demand and wage indicators.I know there are other websites also but getting it from the horse's mouth may matter a lot.
Which of the following skills are most in demand for say a 3 year experienced professional and what hourly rate is average :-
1. ASP .NET
2. J2EE
3. Oracle DBA Developer
4. Sun Solaris Administrator
5. MCSE - 2000 / 2003 .
Kindly share in ur observations for common benefits . This goes out specially for ppl in the IT industry.
Manasvi.
PS : Is it a correct assumption that the demand for IT is expected to grow in Canada alongwith India as Indian pro s may not wish 2 come 2 Canada due to rise in salaries on their home turf ?
cskanagaraj,
Thanks for the info.
Manasvi,
So be it. Let me put forward what I and my husband has come through so far.
Jobs in demand are
Tibco
SAP
.net
Business Knowledge espicially in Oil Industry is doing good.
People who can work with Tibco and SAP can demand upto $100 / hr based on their role and expertise but the avg. rates are $55-60 /hr
.net is going somewhere between $40-$45/hr.
Of course we cannot vouch for the billing rates as we got from our friends.

Hi vand3matram,
Welcome to the discussion.I was reading your previous posts, it indeed is disheartning to see such discouraging words from people like sridharam.
We all are adults here, so we do understand the being an immigrant is not a cake walk in a new country .So we dont want suggestions for all the alternatives to lead our lives. We wecome anyone who has any views on the current IT trends in canada and any related info.
IT security is hot in USA right now and so also in Canada.Based on our discussion with our friends in canada, the scenario is not that appalling as it seems to be from this forum. If you are in middle East and working in a Oil sector in IT Security, it might help.
But I would love to hear this more from people who are in Canada and who can judge the market better that we mere mortals out here in USA
1. IT / Networking security is one of the 3 top skills in demand and growing in Canada esp CISCO systems . I think I shd have added that to the list .
2. I have a feeling that IT demand is here to stay in Canada as IT is one of the latest professions and with the Indian IT market being hot not lots of Indians wud like 2 immigrate - leaving the field open to Immigrants .
3. Ritu , when u say SAP - do u mean technical (ABAP4) or functional or both ? How are the Oracle Apps in demand - HRMS/CRM/Financials ?
4. I m sure that .net /SQL server are stable in demand skills in Canada . But wonder how does J2EE fare in comparision .
5. Top 3 cities are Toronto , Ottawa .Vancouver/Edmonton .
6. Though voluntary jobs help u in adding on 2 ur Canadian experience I do not consider them to b an ethical practice.
U r invited to add your positive observations .
Manasvi.
Dear Friends
Its nice to read all your posts. Please share your experiencies regarding Software Testing/Tools demand in Canada?
Thanks a lot for your views.
PMA.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Knowledge is Power
PMA: software testing skills are in demand if u have experience with Load Runner or Win Runner by mercury interactive, that i know of.
vand3matram: Security is in demand especially in the field of Cisco PIX/ VPN/ IDS, but lot of government agencies use Checkpoint IPSO based FW/VPNs because of stateful inspection of packets or application intelligence. In anycase, u can go to workopolis.com and put in your keywords that u r proficient in and see what it looks like.
