My brother-in-law recent got a job offer from from CGI (headaquarters in Canada) in India in Bangalore.
He wanted to know if it is good company to join before he accepts the offer. He has to reply within 2 days and join next month.
He says the company profile looks good on the web but he is double checking to be sure. I hardly know anybody working in software field here in Canada.
Right now he is working as a team lead in software development in Bangalore.
The web address for the company is
http://www.cgi.com/web/en/home.htm
Does any work/know anything about CGI?

Tell him to go for it. CGI is a good. He can move easily around since they got other offices. They are also buying some firms, I believe. Overall, good firm to work for.
How did he get the offer? Do they have a subsidiary there.

I had a chance to work with the CGI (Canada) consultatnts in India while I was working with HFCL, Chandigarh. The company itself is very good and Bell Canada has some equity (around 20-30%) in it. Its head office is in downtown Toronto. Your brother-in-law may have lot of opportunity to grow in this company.
The consultants we had from Canada office were so dumb....so dumb that they came to help us in CDMA network planning and products like Centrex but some of them did not know even the basics. I had to teach two of them about Centrex before they could actually HELP me in product and market planning... That was fun....but the tragic part was that they were charging our company $40 an hour per consultant and our company was paying them HAPPILY BECAUSE THEY CAME FROM PHOREN COUNTRY.....

Firstly to Sanjeev's comment - CGI's Head Office is in Montreal and not Toronto Downtown. The downtown location is just one business unit, which has recently moved to Markham Hwy 7/Leslie.
As regards CGI - I worked for CGI in Toronto for 7.5 years from 1996 to 2004. The Indian operations they have used to be IMR Global whch was bought out by CGI in 2001. IMR was basically a training organization and had offices in a few countries across the globe.
Overall I would say CGI is a good place to be with. If in the future he's planning to move here, then getting a transfer may be possible. I worked with the downtown location (SI&C - System Integration and Consulting) - that is one of the worst Business units to work in. They have a hire-n-fire policy for some wierd reason. But that's besides the point.
As regards CGI n Bell - CGI merged with Bell Sygma a few years ago, in return Bell now has around 35-40% stake in CGI. Most of Bell's IT is outsourced to CGI.
The way CGI has been growing over the years is by acquiring smaller IT organzations. Currently it is one of the largest Canadian IT consulting.
...and for those that care to know - CGI stands for Conseils Generale Informatique (in French). (I may have got the spelling wrong)
