This is interesting thread. How much difference should the salary be between US and Canada, for one to consider moving(taking into consideration salary difference, cheap gas and grocery in US, low car insurance but less social circle and no cricket).

I am okay to drive up to half an hour.

Do you think TN to GC is faster than H1B to GC?
Any major difference between these two processes?

No, one is not faster than the other. However, obtaining TN for the first time is cheaper ($56) and faster (few hours) than a H1. You can always have the employer change your status to H1 at a leisure pace if that's what they insist.

The caveat is TN has limited number of occupations that are eligible while H1 has quite a bit of wiggle room in defining your occupations and titles.

The process is not different either. For GC, it is the same series of steps. What cdn_dude is refering to is possible; however, since TN does not allow dual intent, you will have to time the application carefully during the final stage, which is the adjustment of status (AOS). In any case, the final stage could be anywhere from few months to several years depending on the category of filing and how the priority dates fall in and out.

I was in CA last year for a week. Stayed with a friend and my assessment is that a 110K family income is not a big deal there, it is probably not enough unless you cut corners. For instance, my friend has a 1800 sq. ft detached house (2 car garage) in a beautiful neighborhood in Redwood city, he paid about 900K for it a few years back and it is about 800K in value currently. Groceries and stuff might be a bit cheaper than here but nothing significant. Gas prices are a bit cheaper (expensive by US standards) but you will most likely drive much more. You really should do the math on what you'd have left after average home/travelling/grocery expenses.

The flip side is it is a beautiful state with stunning landscapes, the weather (at least when we were there) was fantastic and if you are in IT, there are plenty of opportunities. There is also so much to do all year round.

I love it here in Cda. and don't plan to move, but if I ever do move to the states, my first and only choice would be California.

On the whole, it would be a move with some risk, the rewards are certainly there and the risk/reward equation is tilted in one or the other direction based on your perspective. Tough choice - I wish you good luck!

Are you there?

How much the cost of 1800 sq ft. townhome in areas near by silicon valley?

What else I should consider for relocation?
Thanks,

What else should you consider ? California state taxes which used to be quite high so check current rates.

-- This is not as expensive as compared to the other areas in Sunnyvale (94087 zip code) because the school district is not good. There are many good apts nearby, so you should be ok.

-- It is not "faster" because the final stage, the AOS eligibility, depends on your country of birth. But then, you always preserve your 6 years of H1 limit and can change jobs very easily - since TN is not "sponsored" by the employer and employers are more "TN friendly" than H1.

Congrats Meitsme ...

Cdn Dude gives very accurate responses in all US related threads ...

Differences b/w TN & H1

Wife can work on TN but not on H4 ...

In H1 , you can change jobs .... TN to GC may not allow you to do so ...

I d say go for it ... but consider your parents' PR application ...
