Hi Fellow CDs,

I never realised the stakes until I browsed this article...

http://ww1.mid-day.com/news/city/2006/january/129669.htm

Would welcome your opinions whether we should continue renting $1 videos from local grocery / video shops and let this market grow or should we follow the legitimate path...

Personally, I wouldnt mind spending more for a legitimate copy though I have issues with thier over pricing as well as late releases...(thats no excuse for opting for pirated copies). But I always tempted to go for the pirated copy since they come out sooner than the original (and cheaper too) and cannot wait to load onto my video..:(

Wouldnt it be better if the original prints were available as soon as the movie is released?? (who would go to the theater??...):p

I m confused

I think it depends on your own values and ethics. Pirated movies are out there because of the demand for it - everyone wants it "cheap" and "fast" ie/ not waiting for the release as you mentioned.

Growing up, the video stores in my home town wouldnt rent out 'original' vhs tapes..and instead only rented out the copies. It was an awful experience as they would be taped over and over again until you couldnt see with any clarity or hear half the tapes.

Now..with DVD's out there etc, people still ask for vhs copies because of the price (imo). Why dont Desi video stores just keep multiple copies? However I have heard that some people who rent DVD's allow their children or themselves damage and scratch the disks.

I think it depends on the individual: I am willing to pay a couple of dollars more because its ethical, much better quality and STILL cheaper than going to the theatre.

I don't rent anything that looks like a pirate. I have two main reasons ;

First is the ethics. It is not a victimless crime as some might think. Yes, their are the uber rich producers and actors, but there are also the electrician, the painters, the dress makers etc etc who depend on the movie industry for a living. And I cannot bring myself to steal from them. Actually I cannot steal from anybody, no matter how rich or poor.

Second -The copies are so third class - I just hate them. It is like buying a mercedes (my TV/DVD System) and then trying to drive it with Kerosene!! :D Basically - if you cannot afford the gas - why buy the mercedes?

Heck we are talking Indian movies here - what is the rush? Wait until the are 1 year old... you haven't missed anything

It is a matter of individual choice, but I always prefer watching movies in theatre. It is totally a different experience, which I do not think, even Bose home theatre systems or big screen TVs can mimic. I still regret missing the Matrix, Kill Bill and Lagaan on big screen. Paying $15 to enjoy "Paheli" on big screen was a "paisa vasool" experience.

Regarding pirated prints, I used to rent $1 VHS before, but now, I bought DVD player and threw away my VCR. And the guy who rents Hindi DVDs near my place has such a big attitude, that I stopped renting Hindi DVDs. Now I only rent English movies from Rogers.

Also, availability of Hindi movies on DVD is also an issue. I prefer to see good moves in theatres. And the DVD wallah will only stock Shahrukh or John Abraham movies. If I ask him for a Nagesh Kuknoor movie or some Bachhan oldies, he think, I come from some alien planet

see my today's post in shopping :p

pyaasa.ca is bit expensive. It helps only if you watch movie almost everyday, or atleast more than just weekends. My rate is only one movie per week - that too on saturday

Meghal,

That was my option too...atleast until I was in India. Now with 2 kids, (and 1 only 9 months), it is impossible for us to visit the theater...home theater is our only option..atleast for another couple of years...:(

Thanks anyway for reading thru the post and your comments.
