Hi,

I believe it is pretty common among People from India and other neighboring countries to carry and declare
jewels when you land (migrate to Canada).
I am one such person who carried sizeable amount of Jewels and completed the process comfortably.
I thought there are lot more people looking for information related to bringing in their Jewels during
their Immigration (Landing) process. I hope my experience will be helpful for them.

When I landed, I filled two forms
1. B4 (Goods you are Importing while landing).
2. B4A (Good to follow at a later date).

I didn't carry my Jewels while Landing but I listed each and every individual ornament in the B4A list, listed their weight and value in Canadian Dollars. I had more than 40 individual pieces including very small ones summing up to 1.25 Kg as their total weight.

Apart from listing them, I also photographed them in 10x8 prints and attached the Photographs with the Jewels list.

I showed the forms and Photographs to the customs officer after completing the immigration, It took a while (Please be patient when you see others passing you early).
The Customs officer entered the list their Computer system, She made few copies of the Forms we submitted and the Photographs, Stamped our Papers and we ended up with a "Welcome to Canada" from her.

I believe one might be liable for duty/tax if the jewels are sold with in a year of Landing. I didn't research this much in details because it wasn't of interest to me but just browsed it. I also think the same applies to other goods also.

Wishing you Good luck and Happy Landing.
- JRF.

You cannot sell the goods you have brought with you / the car you have imported into canada within the first year of bringing/within the first year of importing. This is because you have availed the exemption of customs duty on these goods/car as a new immigrant.
