Here are a few Vehicle buying tips :-
New vehicles -
Mostly for brnad new vehicles you buy, you go to a delaer,
Here only thing you should check is the discounts and rebates you get from the dealer and after the service.
Used Vehicles;
This needs a thorough research - whether you buy from a dealer / private party
Here are few things you should follow;
- IF buying from a private party
1. First get the important Vehicle information
- Mileage, featuers of the vehicle and model info.
- Service history and reacords
- VIN ( vehicle identification number)
2. Do get this reports on your own
- one from CARFAX
- http://wsf.carfax.com/cfm/general_check.cfm?partner=OST_0
and look for - history of the vehicle for accidents,
- types of usage, ( commercial / perrsonal
- number of owners/regiatrations etc.
- odometer correctness
- Major servicings / repairs - most important
and with mileage and age of the vehicle - do a math for consistency of usage over
a period say per month or per annum. this will give an idea how well the vehicle
was maintained /used.
- GET current market value / Blue book values
based on the year, make, model, mileage and available features
- http://www.usedcarsontario.com/bluebook.php
3. After you are satisfied there is nothing flawed in the above reports and are at reasonably accepted limits. then
4. Get a dealer's / mechanic's inspection done
( if you are buying from a private party this is most recommended)
> If buying from a dealer then NOT required. as the dealer is supposed to do it
and sell you (as in most cases and I guess as per safety laws)
Even when you buy from a dealer, the "blue book value check" and "CarFax" reports are required. and that helps you in bargaining the price with the dealer.
these few things will help you get a good vehicle for reasonable price.

I think the best time to buy a a new car is in the month of September, when the dealers try to get rid of their old inventory and in the process gives a lot of discount........
By the way, how is Huyndai Ascent.............? Is it a good and reliable car?

One more aspect is to check the vehicle safety ratings from the CRASH TEST results ( mostly carried out by Insurance companies) to rate vehicles.
you can find more info and crash test results here.
http://www.canadiandriver.com/tools/
This will help in judging a vehicle with regard to safety ratings. Most New Car buyers DO consider this as important, particularly if a person in and around Wintery Belt (snow prone jones etc.)
