This is a big problem in this country. After long week, when we try to relax on week-ends, grocery is a big time consuming task eating your rest mood.

Back home, it was never a question. Dudhawala was supplying milk (plus water) at home, Sabji was just available door steps and Family Grocer was shipping everything to our door. I hardly new price of any item.

Here? You have to go from shop to shop to find things - cheaper things. Something we go to a special store that sells only a item that is only 10 cents less. I am not personally doing that, but it happens with many people. Some vegetalbes are good on Soon Lee, Ice Cream is cheap in No Frills, India Towns has good Indian Vegetables, Bombay Bazar is selling milk products cheaply - all this results in at least 3 hours grocery time.

What is your experience guys?

Here's what my wife has streamlined for our household
1) Vegetables and pulses: Indian stores- alternate weeks
2)Meat/Bread/juice/diary products/fruits: Costco(price club in ontario) -alternate weeks
3) Cleaning products/lotions/shapmoos: online with an environmentally friendly company (according to their claims)-once a month
4) fresh fruits and some other vegetables: a local place and loblaws. alternate weeks

I think our grocery time may be about 2 hrs a week. However, my wife has the luxury of being her own boss...so I have not been to a grocery store on weekends since last may. Before that, 2 hrs every weekend on groceries...I hated it!

I used to go Costco Regularly, then fed up with those bulk stuff. I had to eat same chips for months!!

Haven't gone there for last 6 months.

I really don't like the way Indian Grocery stores are. Very crowded, everything is disordered and dirty. It reminds us India perfectly.

There are a lot of desis who actually like this, no kidding. They like that Indian atmosphere re-created here.

I think if someone opens an ultra-clean Indian grocery store with sparkling floors and super-organized aisles, only Canadians will go there. Desis somehow like that crowded cramped feeling they get in desi stores.

Well, there are other stores in Mississauga as well that are quite clean. But you cannot compare the cleanliness and organization to say a Dominion or a Loblaws (I know you can't really draw comparisions to these but I'm just trying to make a point).

I just meant to say that Desis like to shop in crowded and noisy places. Try to imagine a huge Loblaws-style Indian grocery store with elevator music and all the works, where Desis are quietly doing their shopping using neat shopping carts. Can you? To me, it just don't fit! :)

The choice of items here is so huge. There are so many products in a store that you almost get lost if you see the items, ingredients, price, etc. You can spend hours and hours on grocery if you want in Canada. On weekdays if I go to buy bread, milk and fruits, I do not look at other items at all.
