I just meant to say that Desis like to shop in crowded and noisy places. Try to imagine a huge Loblaws-style Indian grocery store with elevator music and all the works, where Desis are quietly doing their shopping using neat shopping carts. Can you? To me, it just don't fit! :)

:) actually a friend of mine is trying to do just this in Montreal and Toronto. However, with the higher overheads I'm not sure you can keep the 3 pirated movies in a 5$ dvd crowd happy. We are quite the bargain hunters you know? :)

Well, good luck to him.

I was actually in New Jersey for a while and I remember someone started something like this. It was a huge desi superstore, very neatly organized with all kinds of scanning machines/bar coded items, uniformed (with ties!!) English speaking staff and spanking new shopping carts. I went there a couple of days after it had opened and was pretty impressed.

I went there few mos. later and guess what!! Except for the size of the store everything had changed :D . Many of the shopping carts were partially broken, the store was jam-packed with desis and you had to elbow a few people to get to an item on the shelf. Some smashed veggies lying on the floor, the sound of kids crying and employees screaming at the top of their lungs to heard across the store. And to top it all off, strangers came upto you asking where you are from in India, what you do for a living and whether you have a greencard or not. :p

You know what though, I enjoyed shopping in the latter version much more.

And yes, I am aware that I need to get my head examined.

Don't think it as a burden... make it a family fun event...You can have a good family time together by going for grocery shopping.

This sort of thing happens in the usa too. most of the stores are cramped and people behave as if they are standing in a ration que. when they come to the store they leave th curtacy behind and come.

they cut lines and stand and when people tell them that the que is behind they make a face and behave as if they did not hear. Some times i see them fighting over okra/bhindi as if one will take all leaving nothing for others.

i have faced the same thing in Air India, people rushing for the connecting flight when they hear the announcement as if the flight will take off without them.

i believe it is part of indian culture and it is up to us to keep things neat. if they want the stores to be clean then we should not make it messy. everything starts with us.
