Are you sure:eek: ??? This is very bad for us:cry: !!! Becoz here we are used to this. I thought there people are so busy, so at least they spend less time in shopping!! That’s not cool!! Especially for those who’s coming from UAE.

LOL! Ma'am, if u cannot adjust to such a *basic* change in lifestyle, aap ka yahan aa key kya haal hoga... I shudder to think about that!

This is Canada, not a sheikh's paradise. Welcome to the REAL world! ;)

Thanx Chandreshji for your feedback:) . Yes life will be different over there though ME is not much different. Here also people do most of these chores themselves. But yes people do have option of maids. Which will be luxury over there.

kjoyti, sorry to shatter ur illusions, but life in the ME is ***extremely*** different from life here. I know coz I grew up there, and that too amongst shaikhas, not an ordinary lifestyle u might say. After that, even the US seemed a dump.. so just imagine what Canada, which tries to hard be a faint facsimilie of the US and fails 90% of the time, must be like... :D

Maids are not the only luxury. Having time and energy to sit down to a decent meal is also a luxury here. :D Best of luck.................:D

Hi Beautysalon,

Wohi hoga jo manjoore khuda hoga!!!!!!!!! Thanx beautysalon to shatter my illusion:rolleyes: . BTW don’t worry I’ll adjust myself:p . I have lots of experience & know how to adjust ourselves;) If you shift from 1 place to another you have to face some difficulties but I know how to handle them. Don’t worry, no need to think abt us!!!!!!!!:D ! We’ll know how to adjust in new circumstances:) .

Life is becoming more & more tough day by day but if you don’t spend much time with your family & for decent meal then it’ll be only an excuse nothing else:cheers: .

Ladies & Gentleman,

Lets not generalize Middle East from shopping perspective.
It can be quite different from country to county.

Not everyone from ME is rich ... nowdays very few... definately not working Indians..... Most of indians i know are in credit card depth due bad finances, priorities back home, etc etc .

85% of Indians in ME are in labour jobs. They work hard, save little money and send home whatever they save after eating one meal a day...

Rest are a bit lucky, if they prioritize things.

I have lived in plenty of ME countries during my assignments and can tell you that are quite different in their own ways . ( i know i am now going out of shopping discussion...).

UAE ( Dubai is in UAE - United Arab Emirates)
Has become a h. house ... ( parden me.. )
Day or night you get all kinds of skin .. difficult with children.
Everything is expensive, pay scale is coming down and always there is someone ready to take your job at lower wage. It is crazy .
Saving potential - None or less than 10% of salary
Socially active - Discos/concerts/movies/outings-you name it !!
Temp - upto 35-40 Deg, Humid
Govt - Quite effecient, open economy. State of Art systems like pay telephone bills online/Cable TV via your tel connection itself. etc

Bahrain
Localization of Bahrain's is again in momentum. People are loosing jobs specially in Banking sectors and God help them. Localization actually is a common factor nowdays in Gulf . Skin is also active...
Saving potential - Less than 20% of salary
Socially active - Discos/concerts/movies/outings-you name it !!
Temp - upto 35-40 Deg, Humid
Govt-Quite active. Bahrain is the banking capitol of the GCC.

Kuwait
As usual is the most backward of all. Lazy and dipolomatic. They own half of Dubai's real estate. Nowdays booming because of Iraq. Real Estate is booming in Kuwait besides hotel industry and travel.
Saving potential - Less than 35% of salary
Socially in-active - No Booz/No Disc. Only Movie/Picnics
Temp - upto 45-53 Deg, Dry Heat
Govt- Nowdays due Iraq has started some liberation to avoid vaccum as business may move to Iraq in long run.

Iraq
Still very unstable, however contracts/business is going on like crazy. That is the place to be for desi canadians who want to work in ME. But be careful-things are still unstable. Once Iraq opens it will require a lot of professionals but give it easy 1.5 yrs.
Socially in-active - No anything at the moment. Get free bullets....
Temp - Not sure .
Govt-To early to say, back office run by US

Qatar
Is booming again with new gas opportunities and new investment into their new airport & Travel. They are expecting to beat Dubai and take a crack at the limelight. However Qatar Airways who is supporting the business, i hear is quite political in nature. It will emerge as an alternate to Dubai very soon. Again areas wher Candian Desis can look at.
Socially active - Discos/concerts/movies/outings-you name it !! Skin..
Temp - Not sure .
Govt-Quite active.

& Yes........

most of the ME Guys and Girls do shopping in big malls so that they can get better rates ( volume sales) and therefore save money. We too look for things where U buy one and get the other free etc ...
Some big earners dont care and call the local shop downstairs and he will deliver as his rates are already 5-10% higher on all items. It is not free these guys pay for it , but never realize.

Regarding Maids most Indians in ME get cheap labour maids who come for 1.5hr-3hrs and do your dishes, clean the house, vac.., wash utensiles etc on daily basis.
On Fridays ( friday is like sunday in Canada) we do it ourselves.

Regarding houses , they dont come with cookers/cubbds/washing machines etc. Here in middle east one gets empty apartment and one lands up buying all stuff. There are furnished apartments but always beyond the reach of most Indians. Rent collection varies country to country. In Dubai/Bahrain ex yearly post dated cheques have to be submitted. In Kuwait it is monthly basis. All have different ....

Regarding furniture People buy generally second hand or sometimes new or combination of both... Brands like Landmark/IKEA are available.

Transportation in Middle East Sucks.. Dubai has airconditioned buses. In Oman/Kuwait and some other places you will see buses under 50 Deg C which do not have AC. It is a pitty... Most of us dont use buses. Most of us have cars or do sharing with someone who has one..
Cars are not expensive . I can pick up a mercedes 1991 model for around 13000 CAD. Camry 2000 model for 14000 CAD. Lancer 2000 model for 10000CAD and bargin is possible for almost everything.

In my opinion life is not all the different. It just will take some time, however after dealing with lousy & carzy govt bodies, mis-treated as third rate citizen/for not being local/arab etc etc - I think we will find it relatively easy to adjust than average indians or against how we adjusted to ME. We have already adapted to extreme situations .... so Canada should not be all that bad.

Go ahead .. give yourself that chance....

Phew !!

Rgds
