hi , well i am an indian expat currently living in dubai and own a jewellery business here , and am planning to visit a few friends in canada , they suggest that the jewellery market there is very boring , and tough people have the will and funds to buy good gold (22k ) and diamond jewellery the availablity of designs (indian diamond designs) is very restricted and the prices charged by retail jewellers are really high (making , labour charges etc) , i am considiring visiting with few of my collection and holding a small exehibition cum sale for the jewellery (mostly diamond jewellery ) as i feel i can really offer a very god price , i am mostly targetting our indian community , so please u seniors could you advice me on how to go about doing this , and where i could get contacts of our community people and according to your thoughts as you are setteled there is doing this project worth-while ?
also if i could get an idea on taxex and duties on jewellery , i am planning to do this in ontario.
thanks and best regards .
kashyap .

It is a very good idea. I used to work for a Parcel - Courier company, and found tonnes of poorly packed parcels containing this kind of jewellery coming from India, addressed to big companies like Bay, Zellers, etc...
I think you should get your packing to the International level and try sampling with the big ones. Even Desis loose interest in the 22Ct gold jewellery if they stay in Canistan more than a few years.
You should prepare a catalogue and try to approach the Buyers of these key companies directly. No Desi middlemen please.

thanks sankaracharya , but selling to the big jewellers is afer some time of exploring the market , as i have heard that they need a big exposure and big credits , i am actually trying to sell diamond jewellery to people there our indian freinds etc through personal contacts and holding small exehibitions as i have more than 8yrs of experience in the jewellery field i thin i could do good with the seniors support , also if you could give me sone details like can i import jewellery if i am not a pr or a citizen and on a visit visa , after paying the duties etc ? and do i get a refund of duties for all the unsold itens i take back , and places where i can hold small exehibition etc .
thnks

1.I do not know anything about the taxation, duty structure as I'm not related to this industry anyway.
2.There are plenty of Exihibitions very focussed and ethnic which are organized through out the year. There are also special events organized during the Republic Day and Independence Day by the Indian Consulate and there are several events organized.
3.There are plenty of highly specific Yellow Pages published from Toronto and you could look up several event managers.
4.You should make an initial visit and just move around through Desi shops and collect market information, before making your strategy for future efforts.
5.My experience is only related to watching these packages from various exports houses from New Delhi/Rajasthan go pass through the conveyor belt while I had to scan them. If possible I'll try to collect some of the destination addresses for you and e-mail to you. Please PM your e-mail to me.
6. I just want to do it as help to a fellow Desi and out of no commercial and business interest, as I'm a highly qualified Desi doing General Labour job here to avail Full Medical Benefits which I cannot get from my regular field.
Best Regards,

Hi Kash,
Your info was very interesting. I am moving next year to Toronto in the Jewellery line as well. I now live in Thailand for the last 18 years. I do my own custom made jewellery, both diamond and gemstone jewellery. I was born and brought up in Bangalore before moving to Thailand. Would be grateful if you can send me info on this topic to
Mike
