If you put your home phone number on your resume, please ensure that:

1) Your answer machine/voice mail message is clear, consise and professional for ex/ "Hi this is ... Im not available at the moment, please leave a message". Do not use hindi songs or other recordings that you might think are funny. An employer may not.

2) Ensure you have a notebook/daytimer and a working pen/pencil near the phone to take messages/write down important information. If you have to put the phone down to find a pen - an employer may wonder about your 'organizational skills'

3) Invest in Caller ID if you can. If you know ahead of time the caller may be an employer you can prepare yourself mentally.

4) Do not have anyone answer the phone that cannot take a proper message or speaks very little english.

The worst is having a small child answer the phone. It might be 'cute' or a 'learning experience' however when you are seriously job searching this is not the time for little jimmy to scream ' MOOOOOOOOOOOOOM PHONE FOR YOU'.. its some GUYYYYY".

On the other hand, if your little one has impeccable phone manners then by all means - let them answer.

Excellent tips.

One question. What looks professional on resume ? Having a home phone number ? or the cell number ?
(Once you have a job, you are least in touch with your home phone)

I've read that few mgr. don't like to call on cell phone number and even don't mind calling on work number.

How true is this ?

(I personnaly beleive that work phone is provided by company for business purpose usage. Hence, should not be used for any non-business purpose - not atleast for job-search! )

You can use either phone number on your resume. I would suggest you use what is the most convenient for you AND which has voice mail. Also, do not put your office phone # on your resume/cover letter.

The employer looking at that would wonder (as you said above) if you would use their phone and your work time to job search elsewhere.

So you are right!
