Hello CD members,
Lately i find many members advise failed immigrants that they did not do proper check (in the age of computers) about immigration to Canada.
To me personallly it does not make sense. Most of the websites (Govt. and immigration agents) donot provide the true information. I am not telling that it not useful to find out if will gain useful employment by immigrating but i am only telling you that you really canot find out by doing research since what i feel is that only luck and being at the right place at the right time (most of the time) will get you the job. In this case, you really canot assume by reasearch that you will or not get a job. It is a 50-50 chance. of course i agree common sense points like an experienced engineer who does not know proper english and applied fpr a PM/PL leader's job will be outright rejected (soft skills are essential)
Let me explain to you further :
Can any of the suceessful immigrants tell me as to what research they did before coming to Canada which prompted them that they will get a good job once in Canada? and what did they do to achive tha?
As far as i am concerned, i fell that all come to Canada by taking a chance. Those who get a good job are sucessful. Those who do not are not sucessful.
Some many IT people are well employed while so many IT people are also unemployed. The same engineers from the same college.: 1 gets a good job while the other struggles. The same talented architects :1 gets a job at $8 an hour, 1 at $13 an hour, 1 is unemployed, 1 changes line (without training) and gets $18 an hour, $20 an hour. Why is all this? Almost all have the same smartness, personality, english speaking skills etc...
Let me further explain :
Who are the people coming to Canada :
1. People who reach the limit of H-1B renewal in USA. They come to Canada so that it is almost similar to their US life (provided they like USA). Most plan to go back after citizenship. Some do go back.
2. People in the ME, who feel that they might enjoy freedom in Canada. They also come for the education of kids. Some donot get jobs here and they go back to ME.
3. People from India who are tired of their life (corruption, unhygenic conditions, traffic, urban sprawl,bribe etc..). Most think of the $ conversion.
In all the cases mentioned above, i feel that NO ONE (not even sucessful immigrants) can do a research and then find out that they will or will not get a prof. job in Canada.
There are people who are warned by the word of mouth that Canada does not have professional jobs. The optimist ignores it and comes to Canada while the pessimist adheres to it and stays back in India.

Govt. and Immigration Websites are there for providing factual information about Canada (Geography, Economy, Immigration etc.), not employment advice which is different for each individual.

And yet you'll gladly support this engineer's view about the unfair employment practices in Canada, rather than suggesting that he improves his language skills.

You forgot the most importance factor, "Attitude"

Planning and taking a calculated risk and perserverance are the key points towards moving to a foreign country and expecting to do well there. TK you are an architect from REC , so is my relative. When she decided That she wanted to move abroad she chose to do her Masters in The US. The course was supposed to last 1.5 yrs and after taking a loan by mortaging family house she left for the US. However due to certain probs with univ her course lasted for 4 yrs!!!! the difficult times she went thru, studying , working part time, trying to pay up interest on loan as well as supporting herself alone in a foreign country were pretty harsh on her. But she took it in her stride , finished her course , got a job in CA which paid her not much about 32K, in about 2 yrs later she is LEED certified and on to relishing her success thru hard work by moving into a better paying and satisfying job, finding a life partner and living life to the fullest.
During her darkest days she never ever complained about the country she lived in, about the way the Univ. prof treated her and how her course extended from 1.5 to 4 yrs.
I think attitude makes all the difference and Canada has given you an opportunity to live a there , it is upto each individual to plan the route to success.
I have cousins who immigrated there, dentists one who is a sales manager now , very happy with what he is and his wife also a dentist who moved to medical transcription right here in an MNC so she could approach the same company there and she is working in the same company there.
What you need to do is find out what qualification u need to be accepted there and go ahead in that direction , meet architects like you and find out how they are managing there...
It is the same story all over the world , you have to adapt to be accepted.
