I was in a multipurpose desi shop last weekend on Gerrard ... a shop that has threading services, tailoring services, CD rental etc...... There was a lady working there who appeared to have just come from India and she was employed to do threading. The employer was mad at her that day and was yelling at her in front of the customers about why the place hadn't been cleaned the night before. 5 minutes later the employer told her that they really can't afford to keep her and she has to go find a job somewhere else.

I won't even start talking about the unprofessional nature of the employer but the main reason for this post is that when we come to Canada, we can do better than this.... why is it that many people resort to being ridiculed in an indian environment instead of trying to say work at a grocery store or a Walmart or the mall? Fine language initially is a barrier but the sooner people interact with the western community, the ffaster they will elarn as opposed to getting stuck with the desi gang?

Just my rant of the day.. I guess I feel worse for that woman than that woman does for her self !

My sister in law (married to my cousin brother) is from India. She came to Canada about 3 years ago. The first thing her in-laws did was to send her to college for basic English lessons. When I first met her, she only knew how to say 'hello, how are you' and 'fine'.

She went to college and a few months later landed a job at Zellers, where she got to interact with people of all backgrounds/communities/language skills. After about 6 months, she was a different person, her confidence shone through and she looked more comfortable in her environment.

I don't know why people from India only want to socialise and associate themsleves with ONLY Indians when they come to Canada - I don't see the reason for leaving India.

When I was in US that were common (working at desi shop) and I understand those are illegal in country but why here.

Same thing I feel why to stick with desi shops and desi areas (ghettos) for living. If you are legal in this country then it's easy to find desi employer type of job anytime and anywhere + some benefits and I am sure that desi employer don’t give any benefits just $8/hr cash.

Well, why come here illegally? isn't it better to be in India with mental peace than come here and live like a slave? I respect the previous poster's sister in law. That's the spirit and I hope more people can be like that. People who give up everything and live here illegally with no life to call a decent life, are just not doing the right thing. Anyway, i won't say more.. I'm sure everyone has their own issues and I'd love to help any way possible.

USA has big population of illegal immigrant. Specially from Mexico but I know there are lot of Indians also illegal there. They are in hope that after 10-12 yrs they will get permanent residency as happens always in USA but now things has changed after 9/11. I agree that living illegal is not easy and big trouble also.

I am not sure how big is this problem in Canada?

There is a Candle factory in mississauga. There are about 300 people working there. The majority are Desis, while it is owned by Chinese people.

If you happen to meet one of them and talk to them, just ask them how they are treated there for $7.75 per hour, no over time, medical benefits(no dental) after one year for the individual.

The kind of the language used in this facility is so degrading, many of the desis are stuck there as they have mortgages to pay and they have not upgraded themselves.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"
