Well here s what happened : I got the contract , worked on it for 9 months ... could not be extended , had to stay out of work for nearly 3 exasperating months .... getting used to contracting .... got a permanent job after that .

If I am not being inquisitive, how was your overall experience with IT contracting? Would you do it again?

Although I was left high and dry for 2 months after the finish , I would do it again as the income is higher and considering that the job is to my liking ... Personally I am risk averse and more comfortable with permanent jobs .... Its money vs permanence ... I guess when the economy is doing well , one can go in for contracts .... obviously contracts are meant for people who are very comfortable with their skills .

Correct. But you will get EI if you are in Permanent Job. (Unless you paid 9% of income from incorporate)

For me, EI is not an issue - because per hour rate is on higher side compare to FTE. It componsates for EI.
As a contractor, at this point, only negative I see is Vacation Time. You can't really plan a vacation - unless you are on long term contract. But long term contracts are not as highly paid anyways. Renewal news comes at the about 2 weeks notice.

I am on contract and my employer / agency must be shaving off at least $15 / hr and I am at $36 / hour presently through my agency. Now if my company wants to bring me on board permanently theoretically should my pay rise or drop.I am not even being paid for my stat holidays right now as I am independent contractor. If I get hired permanently can I expect two weeks of stat holiday pay + vacation pay (should be 3 weeks)+ benefits to be added to my current $36 / hour.

That is $7200 (annually) in terms of holiday pay +benefits while my agency is at least getting $29,400 annually as margin from my employer.

I can say for a fact that in similar engineering roles in Illinois contractors easily charge $65 / hour to their clients and pay their employees $30 / hour. The $15 / hour margin should be very reasonable.

Thanks for all the posts.

Dear VLP being in IT field that too from US, u should know already how to get a job..instead of looking for some consulting company to "Help" you.
Infact you are going to help the consulting company by working u r ass of to the client.

Btw..i am sure u might have already know that..no one will help you if u r useless or pretent to be usefull to others.
Hence...just focus on presenting urself as "Usefull" ..by learning hot skill sets or if u already know then preparing the resume catchy to attract the consulting firms.
and rest is straigtforward...apply to the complanies directly or thru job sites "Workopolis", "Monster" or some other stuff..
Just my 2 cents...not to offend you..but wanted to make urself confident and change of u r though process..
Bottom line...think like u r helping them..instead u r getting help..
My definition of help is..if ur not capable then u need help...
