I have taken a Fitness Center membership at Goodlife Fitness for 12 months starting in April 2007 with monthly payments of $60.00.
Given the fact its a contract for 12 months, is there a way to terminate my contract prematurely since my personal situation has changed and I wouldn't be able to use the club facilities.
Note : The contract only states that it can be terminated prematurely if I move to a location that does not have a Goodlife branch within a 10 km distance.
I would like to know if there's a way to get out of this contract by paying a penalty. eg : $200.00. I would love to know the experiences of someone who has been in a similar situation before I call up the club.
Any help or direction is greatly appreciated.
That...or you could ask someone take over your membership. Its a win-win situation. You can post ads here or on a couple of other sites like the ones below:

This is assuming Goodlife allows such a transfer.

One thing I found out that by just calling up you cannot cancel it. You have to give them something in writing. usually they have their own forms.
What happened with me was that I stopped my PAP, I filled a form at the bank and stopped my PAP. Say something you lost job or you are going to India...
They sent me 2-3 letters, I think it does go to your credit history but the office I was working for there we had a guy working who was kind of collector, he talked to the supervisor as my lawyer/collector (he does have his own company setup he did not lie about it) and asked for some kind of settlement. I think we end up paying $110 we agreed upon $110 but he said send a chk. of $100 she is not going to cry about $10. that way you can save it going to collection agency.

Should it not be started in April "2007"?
That's right, Raj. It was a typo in my original post.
Thanks folks for your suggestions. I guess I could say that I'm leaving the country or travelling on work but will probably need to furnish supporting documentation for this.
I also like mynameisraj's suggestion of using the Craiglist site. Not sure of the likely responses but will check with Goodlife first on whether this is possible at all.
Regards,
Jai.
An update on this.
I was able to cancel my membership by paying a $99.00 cancellation fee - no questions asked.
The other option was to provide supporting documentation for the reason for the move and pay a cancellation fee of $50.00. I didn't feel that it was worth pursuing this option since my reasons for cancellation were purely personal and didn't want further hassles.
It helped that my original contract was with the Sports Clubs of Canada and they were recently taken over by Goodlife Fitness - as part of the takeover, they have completely revamped their membership plans and inducing old members to enrol on new contracts.
Thanks for all your inputs, folks.
