Hi Desi's ,
I will move to USA soon, thinking abt which city to apply for jobs etc..
Can anybody please give some analysis about US cities that have most of the following things in a good combo?
1. No severe winter.
2. Good# of NRI (south indian) population, already settled
3. Average cost of living
4. Low taxes
5. Good infrastructure, amenities.
6. Less crime.
7. Less/No racism

Please provide your valuable inputs.
Thanks in advance.

San Jose, Seattle, San francisco are good for all the above reasons but they are a little on the expensive side as compared to the rest of US

SAN FRANCISCO, SAN JOSE and surrounding area(s) like Silicon valley, Bay Area to name a few. The only problem is the cost of houses and it starts at a cool million dollar. There are plenty of southies. If you are a south Indian Hindu it is as good as Mylapore or T.Nagar. Plenty of southies, plenty of south Indian culture like temples, music, dance and slokas classes for children. There are also many south Indian restaurants including a \"Iyer Mess\" for typical southie food.

The temperature is 22 Deg C and you are about 3 hours away from snow at Lake Tahoe you can drive down to Venice beach in LA or go down to Las Vegas, Nevada for the desert. A typical two bedroom would cost 4 to 5 K per month and there are plenty of start up companies for you to make enough money to pay, spend and save.

Yes, I know what you are asking that is there is small chance of earth quake there, but when the rest is all good, why worry about the inevitable?.

As they said before, you want to make a life then GO WEST !.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"

I don't live in Houston but go to a university very close to it. Houston is an awesome place. It is a melting pot of cultures and the weather is great. You might never see snow again :( . Lots of great Universities belonging to the UT and A&M system in the vicinity. Cost of living is much lower than most of the major cities in the US. Traffic is a problem most quoted by houstonians.

You can also start supporting T-mac and the Rockets or the Astros  .

Lots of desis in Houston, for more info on desi life/events:

Good luck!

U want less/no racism but want good# of NRI (south indian) population, already settled. Looks like you are contradicting yourself.

Bias aside, Houston is a typical big city and lots of crime and traffic. Drive-by shootouts are common. Raleigh is good, but u may not get lots of Mylapore mamis as u desire.

4k to 5k per month as apt. rent? That's too high.

As DIO has pointed out, you won't get all of them together.
My priorities are : not-so-cold winter, average cost of living and NRI community, avg. home price.
Seattle has it's unique pro's.
Houston sounds good except the traffic and crime.
Any opinions about Raleigh,NC and/or Atlanta??
