Hello Everybody,

I need your serious guidance here. I am planning to move to Canada in a year's time with my husband and 4 years old child. I am 32 now. We both are doing admin jobs in Mumbai and wish to do similar jobs in canada too. (Could it be possible? Of course we both are prepared to take up any available job initially, we are flexible)

Now I need to know which cities in canada are better for us to move to? (Weather-wise, jobs wise). You know weather in Mumbai is pretty hot. We are never exposed to cold weather. Can we (consider my child please) adjust to the extreme weather like in Toronto or need to move to bit warmer places like Vancouver.
Also which city would have sufficient admin related and secretarial jobs available? Which city has a cheaper cost of living?

Gurus, kindly help me please, suggest a few cities so that I can begin my R&D on those cities. Kindly spare some time and reply at the earliest.

Regards,
ms

Hi Ms,

I think the answer to your questions above are: it depends. Immigrants move from coast to coast in Canada. Yes Vancouver is relatively milder in weather than the rest of the country (im not sure about the eastern coast). However even these days its very chilly here ! You will not be able to escape cold and snow entirely here.

Living in the cold is not as bad as one may think. Even for your child, if you ensure that the child is wearing sufficient layers of clothing when outdoors they will even enjoy playing in the snow :) The human body is remarkably adaptable. On the flipside, even the coldest places have lovely summers.. and you can find administrative positions anywhere in the country you go to. This gives you a lot of choices!

The cheaper places in terms of house prices will be away from the Big cities (ie vancouver, toronto and montreal). They are relatively cheaper but nowdays the cost of housing is going up in these places as well: ie/ Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Saskatoon etc. You will find Desi's in all these cities.

for an article on best places for families in canada here is a site:

Finally: my advice is to venture out and try to find the city and climate which suits your needs..dont base it on where 'everyone else goes'. You are embarking on an adventure..leaving your home and trying a new land. There are opportunities everywhere if one is willing to work hard.

good luck !!

Hi,
Was in mumbai for 6 years, and yes, there is a huge difference between the climate in mumbai and vancouver, even though the latter is milder than most of the other places in Canada.
But you might want to check out Halifax as well as towns in the south - eastern parts of Nova Scotia. Would be foggy, but summer temperatures are comparable to those in Vancouver, and the long drawn out Autumn in those parts delays the onset of winters.

To:

Mrs.MS,

Hi !, I used to live in Borivali(West) between 1997 to 2001. My family considers that as the best time of their lives. We are here in \"CANS' since 2003 and we will be applying for our Citizenship. We plan to leave \"CANS\" some time later this year. Our options are USA/Dubai or India.

In India I would like to go back to Mumbai as first choice if not Bangalore.

Hence my question to you is How is real estate market in Mumbai now a days. How much would it cost for a 2 bedroom Apartment in areas like Borivali, Kandivali, Malad now a days?

Thanks in Advance & Good Luck on your Immigration to Canada!

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"

Very hot! The real estate market has gone crazy. Properties, which were not selling, are now sold at double their prices. For example a 2-bedroom apartment in Kandivali (E) in Thakur Village would be in the range of 25 - 30 lacs. Remember the total sq. ft. given in the agreement is super built-up and the ratio to carpet would be 35 - 40 %. What this means is a 1000 sq. ft. flat gives you about 600 - 650 sq. ft. carpet.

My suggestions would be to be prepared with a budget of at least 25 lacs 9can be 45 lacs in building with better amenities and can be 20 lacs in an older building - vanilla type) for a good 2-bedroom apartment in a good locality in newer building.

Hi Shankarachaya,

Ice berg is absolutely right about the real estate situation in Mumbai. Prices are really very high. Plus all these rates are for houses far off from the railway stations (just in case u wanna depend on railways for commuting) So that's an additional head ache reaching to the railway station from home.

Yet Mumbai is Mumbai.

Ms
