Recently there has been substantial increase in the average cost of living in India. Any inputs on the current cost of living.... & expenses... would be appreciated.

It may vary across city to city (like Mumbai vs Pune or Delhi vs Lucknow), but an average estimate will be very helpful in planning.

Its is very cheap yarr!
Rent will be the max. depending on the city.
Electricity, water, appliances, veggies, cooked items, transit, auto etc.. are damn cheap. Schools are also cheap (depending on certain conditions)
Veggeies are like Rs 20 for 1/2 kg.
Chicken Rs 135 per kg
Fish Rs 30 to Rs 300 per kg
If you have specific queries please feel free to ask.
Peace

if you are not aware of

http://www.r2iclubforums.com/ (This site has lots of detail but most memebers are from USA)

http://returntoamdavad.com/ (This site has detail about monthly expeses of Ahmedabad on FAQ page. According to me this is high but it all depends on how would you like to make your living standard. There are people who think Rs. 25000 / month is enough for them and there are people who think Rs. 70K/month won't enough. All depends on your expectation and satisfication. Also, it depends on your size of family.)

Please keep sharing your plan and experience of moving back to India.

Good Luck.

Thanks for your input...
We see a lot of reports of inflation in India; prices going up & up..
We can see House (Apartment) prices have gone crazy over the recent years; mostly due to the availability of housing loans & partly unaccounted (black) money.
How does a bank deposit work for a person with OCI status (Overseas Citizen of India): I mean what % interest rates are given on deposit over longer period of time.

In Chennai, companies like TCS, Cognizant, HCL, Infosys etc, have been recruiting for the past few years not a few hundred, but tens of thousands every new year. They are mostly engineering graduates just coming out of college and their starting salary is approximately Rs.25,000 per month. Because of Dearness Allowance increase, class 3 government employee with about 10 years experience, earn as much. Everything from house rent to vegetable prices, has been hiked so as to keep these people in their proper place. We can conclude that a person earning Rs.20 or 25,000 may have the economic status of a class 3 government servant (assuming that he does not have any other income).
