CD's
I am posting this interesting incident which happened to me in Loblaws (Islington and Dixon) and which i am posting so that it serves as a warning to newcomer desi's to canada and may also be of use to senoir desi's.
Just a day before, Iceberg (a desi member of CD) was wondering if the Avatar that i had posted was actually me , since the avatar looked like a non-tamil (the person was white and that was the reason).
Well, Today in Loblaws there was a closing sale. Cloths were sold at 90% discount and hence me and my female companion were buying a lot of cloths . Suddenly an Indian woman (she looked like a Punjabi with all white color and sharp feayures) came beside us and gave us some cloths that she had purchased saying that it would look good on us and taht it was very cheap. Included in that pile was a group of underwears at $0.44 each. As i hated this breach of privacy, iI told my female companion, in Tamil (in front of the Punjabi lady) that we will keep the cloths with us till the Punjabi lady was there and that we will dump it once she gets out of site. The punjabi lady went awat and then returned with some other set of cloths and started speaking to us in Tamil. She told us that she was a Tamil Bhramin from Chennai and that she was in Canada for 36 years. She told us that she was working in a restaurant at Terminal 3 . It came as a pleasent shock to me. I was thinking that she was a North Indian.
Moral of the story : People canot be confined to a particular community based on the features. WHen we grew up in Tamil Nadu, we were informed by our classmates that people from SC/ST community can be easily identified as they will be jet black in color. I think now that those kind of statements are not valid anymore.

So you didnt get the other moral of the story?

dont Assume. I bet you and your wife were really embarrased eh??

I think the lady sounds very classy that she ignored your rudeness and came over to bring you more things.

How about Oriental people on the transit (or shopping malls) who start talking in Hindi. :D

You are really honest by sharing this with us even after you felt bad about yourself ( or may be not)

Not many have that guts to write such things in message boards..

good day..

hi tamilkurvan,
It takes lot of guts to write something like this .you are a champion.
I was on the other end of the story over 20 years back in India being a north indian and speaking malayalam and kannada and hearing someone sitting in the train talk about me in malayalam .when i spoke to him in malayalam he was really embarassed ,but then we had a good time as the train journey last 48-50 hours from Thiruvananthpuram to new delhi
