I just read the above. Is Canadian healthcare system really so bad?
Btw, this is my first post. Its good to be part of this forum.
Sometimes the Canadian health care system reminds me of the govt. hospitals in India- wait times too long and the doctors not knowing their elbow from their knee (not to use the more familiar term).
Due to outrageous wait times and faulty diagnoses, many patients go to India ( and elsewhere in the world)for treatment . I know brokers who make hundreds of thousands of dollars sending these medical tourists to India and Manila.
Please note again I wrote "sometimes" at the outset.
Anyone wondering how good Canadian Health Care is:

Recently Global Tv showed a documentary in Global currents highlighting the case of thousand of octors from around the world who are waiting to be allowed to practice her. Enough Doctors to end the "Wait Time".
During the Documentary one of the things that stood out was the utmost uninterest shown by the guy who is the head of the Medical board. His comments like "How would they know wether doctors from India or wherever are qualified enough to render medical sevices upto the Canadian standards"(I must have rephrased it as I dont remember it word for word) left me astonished.
This man need to get a reality check.
Why dont we start a Public petetion to the Health minister or whoever (Believe the Premier of Ontario loves South Asia and his wife has learnt to make chappatis ).
Let it be a web petition. Just start it and sign up.I will start it.
Maybe that will help.

I AM "CAN-INDIAN"
Personally I rate Canadian medical system one of the best but too delayed. I think this system has got some virus from Indian Judicial system - Justice delayed is no justice.
This system got to increase no. of doctors and must allow foreign trained doctors to practice. Population is getting increased every year whereas quality and quantity of health care services are decreasing. Besides, this is one of the costliest health care. Due to quick, cheap and equally best health care available, medical tourism in India is reaching at high level.

Canadian healthcare is worse than what most middle class desis can get in Indian cities. Most doctors are just average , very few are really good. The front office staff are incompetent and rude. The hospitals are overcrowded and an emergency department visit can lead to a wait upto 12 hours. Post surgical care is virtually absent. You have to go home 4 hours after surgery.
Only advantage is that it is free. But then cost doesn't really matter unless it is some expensive procedure like coronary bypass. Even for that I'd rather pay a few lakhs and have it done in India than risk my life and suffer discomfort here.
Universal Healthcare REALLY sucks. The consumer/patient has absolutely no voice in how he/she is treated. Maybe this is the best system for somebody who is unlucky enough not to have a decent paying job and still forced to remain in this country. For anybody else...Go To India for healthcare.
