USA v/s Canada - An Immigrant's Experience
By: seenappa

Dear CD’s,

I have been a lurker from quite some time and had the opportunity to read the views of CD’s from both sides of the border. There seem to be no dearth of CD’s who are hoping to “fly the coop” once they get their passport. Perhaps, they believe that much better life awaits them south of Canada.
As an ex-U.S.vasi and current Canadavasi, I hope to contribute my 1.17Cdn cents worth to the board. I lived in US for about 6 years before I moved to Canada 2 years ago.

Most of the discussions seem to center on why Canada sucks and US is much better in terms of Jobs, quality of life and opportunities.

This is true to a large extent mainly owing to the comparatively huge size of the USA population (roughly 300 million v/s 30 million in Canada). The cell-phone deals are much better (the concept of unlimited calling plans is totally alien in Canada), US auto insurance costs are chicken feed when compared to Canadian auto insurance, most of your US friends are in white collared jobs and the usual party topics revolve around stocks and company benefits and not resume sending tips. I could simply go on and on.

Now why Canada is much better than USA.:

1) Visa issues:
Most of the Desi's in US live under the long shadow of H1 visa. Every aspect of your life is controlled by this one factor. Whether you get a job, where you get a job, where you live, whether to stay in USA or not, whether you can find a good wife etc. If you are unfortunate enough you’re H1 will be sponsored by a Desi firm, where you will have a chance to find out what “emotional blackmail” really means. Suppose, you are with a Non-Desi company and at some point you will HAVE to apply for green card (which by the way, is easier winning a “Super 7” than getting your Green card within 10 years). The company will hold you and yours dreams ransom for another good 8 years by which time your entrepreneurial ideals and dreams will dead and buried.

2) Huge culture bridge:
Make no mistake when I say that in US, there are times you will feel like a “black Fly in a bowl of white milk”. In US, you will be hard pressed to find even a single Desi/Asian in the above groups. Not ONE Indian police officer. Not ONE TV anchor and especially not a Desi politician. Mostly computer guys, doctors, taxi drivers and convenience store owners who create no cultural impact on an average American citizen. In Canada you have the best of the both worlds, the feel of a first world country like US and the feel of “old country” in terms of variety of food, social gatherings, temples, and a sense of strong attachment. In Canada Immigrants are integrated into all walks of life. You see immigrants, especially Desi as anchors on TV shows, police force, Politicians, immigration officers, politics, arts and culture etc etc.

3) For our children:
Many of us have left our motherlands looking for better future for our children. We all know at some point our children will assimilate fully into ways of the new culture. In US, your kids will have no idea growing up about your culture, your roots or any role models to look up to. I have come across some Desi kids in US who come across another Desi and are simply at loss on how to react. Not that it does not happen in Canada but at least here they attend multiracial schools and get to hear viewpoints of all ethnic groups and know that they can be a part of the political mainstream thanks to the 2 dozen Desi MP’s and ministers in corridors of power. Try looking at some of the class pictures of the Desi kids in US and you will spot that kid in a fraction of a second. This alone will be your number one reason to opt for Canada.

4) America is a bad word in global politics:
During my travels to India, I have spent most of time in parties and gatherings having to explain the “yearly invasions” of G.W.B’s itchy fingers and have been sick of defending US and its policies. I can’t remember, how many times arguments have broken over these issues. I have lost count of how many of my US friends have fallen into depression for having the visas of their parents refused especially when they are expecting a baby and in need of great moral and physical support. US refuses visas to these deserving visiting parents for no rhyme or reason. You will sense an atmosphere of arrogance and superior attitude. This attitude is widely seen especially when you travel, board flights, visit public monuments or buildings. You will realize in couple of seconds that you are the one all the officers are really looking at.

Yes, On the whole US offers better materialistic possessions, well paying jobs, much higher quality of life but if you are somebody who wants to marry, start a family and settle down for good then Canada will be the place where your wandering mind comes back to every now and then.

Love to hear from other expats from USA.

Here are my two cents about the article:

1) Visa issues - I agree that getting the visas (immigration or non immigrant visas) is much easier in Canada than in the US. In the US, you are in H1 status and many times it can be painful.

For most desis, American immigration is employment based - first job and then immigration, and (in my opinion) it is better than "first immigration and then job" like we have in Canada. Especially in Canada, getting a job in your own occupation is a challenge and therefore having immigration only has no meaning. Many times, the savings are exhausted when you do not have a job and then the qualified people turn to call centre jobs for their survival. Therefore, immigration as well as the job (BOTH) are very important for your peace of mind. For the guy who posted the post, he found that in Canada while many others find that peace of mind in the US.

2) Huge culture bridge:

Why do we have to have a desi TV News anchor or a politician or even a police officer? In my opinion, as long as the person is doing his job well, I do not care what his ethnic background is. There is nothing wrong to feel for your own culture. But when we leave our own country, we should try to mix in the new society and try to make friends from other (US/Cdn) cultures, rather than searching for the Indian neighbourhoods to make friends. If the same thing (having a white cop/TV ancor) is thought by any western/white person, that person will be termed as racist. Is this fair?

In the US, there are many famous temples, desi social gatherings (may be more than what we have in canada). Canada is a first world country, but about the feel of "old country", I am not sure. In fact, I see Canada becoming "mini India" or Punjab.

3) For our children:
Teaching your culture to your kids is the responsibility of the parents. I do not know why the OP says that " In US, kids will have no idea growing up about your culture, your roots or any role models to look up to. " In fact I have seen more "confused" desi kids in Canada. They bleach their hair and wear blue contact lenses to look like the "real cdns". But in fact that looks very strange.
I recommend to see a class picture of an elementary school in California. You will see at least 50% asian kids. I do not know what the OP means by "Try looking at some of the class pictures of the Desi kids in US and you will spot that kid in a fraction of a second."

4) America is a bad word in global politics:

Yes, agreed. But how does this affect professional desis like us?

As our fellow freind said
Yes, On the whole US offers better materialistic possessions, well paying jobs, much higher quality of life but
"That's what missing in CANADA then you tell me how anybody could say CANADA is better than USA"????????
if you are somebody who wants to marry, start a family and settle down for good then Canada will be the place where your wandering mind comes back to every now and then.

Read this in another forum:

US is like IIT. Very difficult to get in, but once you are in you have more or less made it.

Canada is like Chartered Accoutancy(India). Easy to get in, but difficult to pass.

I believe this was true 10 years ago. Now there is a middle ground approaching for both places in the above mentioned statement. Canada is not that easy to get in and US is not that attractive a place as before in terms of jobs.

I have been living in U.S for almost 10 years and i do have relatives in Canada and I have recently became a canadian resident.
Just my perception: Canada feels much better comparing U.S in immigration. To add, the quality of life is much better (moderate and more relaxed) compared to stressful life in U.S . Canada is a great country to raise your kids and settle. In U.S, job is your life when you are on temporary Visa (H1 etc) Vs choices are more in canada to try new things without worrying too much.

Interesting thread, comparing apples and oranges. Like other fellow desi's I have also lived / travelled across several countries including America. In my opinion Canada is unique and offers best of both the worlds - I was exchanging notes with a fellow professional colleague of mine who is now in India (UK origin Gora-saab) and I mentioned like enjoying hot samosas with Tim Hortons Coffee surrounded by white snow all around. Even he accepted that no doubt Canada is a good choice for desi folks - Jai Ho !

Guys while the balance of Power has shifted east, to Asia lets be proud South Asians in North America. Lets enjoy the good weather and the fruits of mother nature where ever we live and strive to give more than we recieve.
if we do this we will be in swarg or make the place swarg where we live !

Since everybody is posting their personal opinions, I'll post mine.

In my opinion, US in recession is still a far better place to be (for me) than Canada. Why? The reasons are plenty but this is not the thread to discuss them :)

Cheers
